Water Behind The Slip-N-Seal Thing

Hi,

My daughter managed to drop my Platinum 3776 demonstrator and the cap was splashed with ink. After scolding her (which I now regret, because although she could have been more careful, it was not really her fault), I rinced the cap, dried it with tissue and closed the pen.

However I found drops behind the slip-n-seal inner cap thing (does this have a name?) which is now forming interesting condensation patterns during the day.

I do not dare to let it dry, because then the nib will probably dry too.

What do you recommend : disassembling the converter and cleaning the pen, drying everything and reassembling, or first write the converter empty and live with the drops of condonsation for the time that takes?

thanks in advance,

Peter

advice followed, bit the bullet and the pen is now drying. I wonder how long it'll take.

thanks,

I wouldn't see it doing any harm this way. The problem is if the water had stayed there for a few days it may started corrode the metal.

It might take a while to evaporate from there. I would leave for a for a few days hopefully by then the water will have evaporated I would wait till it looks like it has vanished.

take a look at this thread, it maybe useful

thanks, the tip with the compressed air seems promising.

I would try it, but last time when I bought some I inadvertently took a can of contact cleaner which someone put between the cans of clean air. LOL

So this will have to wait.

As dumb as this may sound...

ok...

maybe take some white rice and fill the cap to help try and absorb it .... kind of like when you drop a cell phone in water and you pack it in a ziplock bag with rice...

Just a though and after you can just dump out the grains of rice...

Hi,

actually after about 24hrs drying all the water has dissappeared. It looks like new again. :)

I imagined it would take a lot longer to disappear from behind the inner cap.

I was thinking about some more radical actions: I need a drier to dry out filament for my 3D printer, which is essentially a box with a heater (to 40-50degC), a fan and desiccant in it to create a desert climate in a box. It is still on my to do list, but I was contemplating of speeding this up.

This totally worked on my 3776 Yamanaka. I had condensation behind the slip and seal inner cap and packed it in a bag of rice overnight. Great advice! Thank you!

A while back I had an old fountain pen that had this same exact thing happen to it when I accidentally spilled a bottle of Poland Spring water on it. I dried the cap really good, but after a while I had mold and yeasty stuff growing inside the cap. It looked like there was life deep down in there lol. The inside of the cap is an excellent area for humidity to build up making it an excellent breeding ground for peculiar things to grow there lol.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
