Dunhill Ballpoint - Which Refill?

S1VYR

Recommended Posts

Hello - hoping you wise folks can help me.

I have recently bought a Dunhill Ballpoint, minus a refill. I do not know the model and am struggling to find a refill.

Bought a genuine refill online, but it was too big. It seems the correct refill is very slim.

No luck at my local pen shops - anyone here shed some light?

I have found that the Dunhill customer service is excellent, finding parts for me for an old from an obsolete box of bits.

If you give the precise size of the refill I will see if I have got anything that fits, another hard to get item is the refills for Waterman CF BPP, I can usually find something that works ok.

Thanks Beechwood, I don't have the old refill, just the pen itself.

Do you think Dunhill might be able to tell from some pictures of the pen?

I have a similar Dunhill--made in the '60's it uses a refill very similar to a papermate jumbo refill in appearance but the tip is much skinnier. Monteverde makes a suitable replacement as does Aurora.

Hello, what do You think about dunhill ballpoint cartridges? Are they smooth and vibrant? Recently I tried a Aurora ballpoint but I was disappointed by the pale shade of its black, It wrote such a light and weak line that It seemed grey more than black

Hi, I don't have any info about the Dunhill brand at all, but I have a few ball points from the early 1970s which use refills very similar to the type now in the BiC 4 colour multi-pens, (white & light blue pens, sold everywhere).

It might be worth trying one to see how it fits, and I found that the metal point part of the refill is the critical area, if that goes into the barrel and shows through enough to write with, then the overall length of the refill can be cut down or adjusted to suit.

Don't know if you are in UK, but WH Smith sell a 2 refill pack for these pens, which I have fitted to several older ballpoints.

These type of refills usually use a spring to return the refill back up after use, can't be sure if your pen is of that type.

Otherwise there are quite a few options that might fit, the PaperMate Lubriglide, or the Waterman slim refills.

Hi, thank You. I have seen on internet that dunhill makes its own refills too in two variants for the ballpoint, a traditional one and an easyflow one. Usually easyflow ones are really smooth and dark but I was wondering if the traditional paste ink is as dark too, I prefer It because it gives more feedback from the paper

Hi again, If the refill type for this pen is completely unknown, I would try a 'Cross' refill, see if that fits.

I've found that most of my ballpoints use either the 'Parker' style, or 'Cross' style.

Outside of those, and different fit, are PaperMate, Waterman and Sheaffer.

If none of those fit then it's going to be a case of trial and error, and modifying the nearest to make it work.

I think dunhill cartridge is Parker Style, so perhaps Waterman won't fit although i belive it should be great working. The dunhill refill is quite expansive so it should be good

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.

Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
