Safari Nib Ink "migration" On Top Of Nib?

NewPenMan

Recommended Posts

Anyone see this ever before, either on Safari or any other FP? The images tell the story..#1 is just wiped, and 2 and 3 happen after I do some writing. I can't explain the round dot that appears in #3.

Any thoughts on cause/solution?

Thank you!

Looks like nib creep and is usually a function of the ink, some inks do this worse than others.

I find Noodlers inks tend to nib creep a lot in safari's

Not sure why, some sciencey stuff...... I changed to pelikan black and it stopped.

Well, I am using Parker Blue Quink in this Safari and in most of my other pens; no other pen does this. I also use Waterman blue-black and I've not noticed it in pens using that ink, either.

I don't recall the Safari doing it with the ink it came with, IIRC, "Safari Blue"

It is just nib creep. It is not a problem. Just use the pen, dont worry about a bit of ink showing up on the nib. It is the kind of non-problem newbies tend to worry about.

Depends on which Noodler's Inks. They have a huge variety of ink and one kind may have vastly different properties from another, where as Pelikan 4001 inks for example tend to share roughly the same properties between them (likewise, Iroshizuku, Montblanc, Lamy, Waterman, etc).

I usually pair up the ink that seems to behave the best with what pens I have inked. For example My Pilot Murex works wonderfully with Noodler's Blue Steel, no creeping, good flow, can write with a light touch on both the front and back of the nib. But with Liberty's Elysium, it dries up too quickly and I can't write with the back of the nib at all. But in my Parker 45 with a 14K Fine, Liberty's Elysium works very well so far, no creeps in that but stays wet. Noodler's Black Eel (bulletproof and lubricated) is great in my Montblanc 225, doesn't creep but sort of coats the top of the nib with a sort of a sheet that doesn't go anywhere just makes the nib look a little grey (probably attracted to the platinum coating). But putting Blue Steel into my Pelikan M250 with a 1.0 stub is just too wet and bleeds/feathers a lot, yet Salix or Diamine Imperial Purple is fine with that setup.

In short, it's hard to say "Noodler's tends..." because they have so many different properties and behaviors of ink just in the brand itself (Eel Line, Baystate line, Bad [insert animal] line, Polar line, etc).

I found Pelikan nibs the worst for nib creep. It's like they want to show the ink. Second worst must be the J95 with the adjust arm.

As others had said it's the ink that cause the creep. But I do feel like some pens makes the creep more visible.

Some nibs can show it more than other depending on how it vibrates against the paper (which also plays a part in it). Sometimes just a little nib smoothing gets rid of it, but I would not go smoothing some nib tipping for the sole purpose of seeing if it helps creeping.

I doubt it can stop the creep on my J95. That that has that adjusting arm that pools up ink. Great for flexing but it gives it a dirty look at the middle of the nib.

My Pelikan is smooth like my Pilots but it just creeps tried everything for inks. I guess it likes having the dip pen look.

The J95 being a soft nib is just something I would consider prone to creeping as it's plenty wet and such.

The Pelikan, well my 14K Medium used to creep a bit from the tines just below the breather hole, but ever since I disassembled the nib unit, cleaned it, adjusted it, and re-seated the nib followed by heat setting the collar/feed with hot water it rarely ever crept on me since and flow as finally consistent and immediate. But if I change the ink, the creep might return so I only know I minimized it drastically for Blue Steel.

No need to worry until that perfect dot morphs into a crop circle. ;)

Nib creep is less noticeable on my Safari with the black nib.

I might actually buy a nib if it does that often, switch out ink and get different kinds of creep circles.

Creep circles = a collection of ex boyfriends?
