I have a quite a few brush pens, my favorite being the Kamei Natural Hair brush. I use them for Asian Calligraphy and Sumi-e paintings on the go.

If you plan on buying one, look for Kuretake or Pentel (Jetpens has them). They sell some nice inexpensive (Sub $20) brushes. The Kamei I mentioned uses Sailor cartridges and converters, as do most Kuretake pens.

Bad print is childish; Bad cursive is intelligent.

I use one regulary, mostly for sketching. Beats markers 1-0 except for variety (available colors at one time) and ease of maintenance.

I have a few Kuretake eyedropper brush pens that came free with bottles of Noodler's ink. I use them with highlighter inks, and they work great for that. Except that I only got myself a sample of Noodler's Georgia Peach, not a full bottle and I've RUN OUT.... :wallbash:

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Hello Everyone,

Do any of you use brush pens? For what purpose?

Thanks

Me!

I have a Pentel brush pen. Dead cheap. Imported from Japan too.

I use it to practice my Chinese calligraphy... and it hasn't helped a bit... I am still gloriously rubbish at it. Fun though. :)

@ Sky Fountain Pens.

I did merge your 2 topics. Same question 2 days in a row seems unnecessary....

I don't care for brush pens. I thought I would. I use them for highlighting.

As Cryptos mentioned, the brush (in Japanese, fude, pronounced foo-de) pen is intended for Chinese or Japanese calligraphy. I bought a disposable while we were living in Japan back in the '70s, but I totally suck at anything artistic, and I never got another. The fude is held much more vertically than a regular pen, almost to the point of requiring a completely different grip. I would not use one for writing English, but here is a brief video showing how Japanese is written using a fude.

I got a Platinum brush pen earlier this week. It's a lot of fun!

As soon as exams are over, I'm going to look into brush lettering tutorials etc. I think my favourite thing about the brush pen so far is how much ink it uses; I can get through one converter of ink in half an hour. Awesome!

  • 2 weeks later...

I use the tiny Pilot Petit brush pens (it comes in a rollerball and FP version too), they're great as highlighters anor for making dramatic notes and the pens can be turned into eyedroppers fairly easily.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
