Sheaffer Targa Cartridge Help

Could you ask around for a vintage (both ends same) cartridge? The length may be better.

One of my original Sheaffer cartridge (school) pens grabs onto its cartridge. I solved the problem by salvaging the spring from a ball point refill and putting it into the barrel behind the cartridge, which now pops right up when the pen is opened.

I like your spring idea, Octo. I might try that. Any idea where I might find a "vintage" cartridge?

Thanks for the model details lisadan. My father had this pen for just about as long as I can remember, any idea how old it would be?

Thanks for the link Mr Pink. Fascinating site.

The spring in the barrell idea seems to be a winner! As Octo suggested I took the spring out of an old cheap retractable ballpoint pen and dropped it into the barrell of my Sheaffer. This now helps to eject the cartridge with the nib section when I unscrew it.

Brilliant.

Thanks for all the help.

My converter arrived this morning and it fits the nib section of my Targa just fine but I can barely get the barrel on at all. I can feel it really struggling to get past those ridges but then when it comes to actually screwing the barrel on it's extremely stiff. Sure enough when I unscrew the barrel again, the converter is left stuck inside.

Looks like I'll have to stick with the spring solution and regular cartridges. When I got the converter I also bought a bottle of ink that I now don't have a use for, nevermind.

Thanks everyone for your help

Save the converter and bottle of ink for your next Sheaffer. ;)

Looking at the cartridge protruding there I have the idea it is too long, at least the part sticking out.

In my Targa it should protrude 38 mm or 1.5 inch from the metal part of the section.

The ridges in the barrel should be there, to support the cartridge. The best way to pierce a Sheaffer cartridge is to drop it into the barrel and then screw on the section. The cart will be pierced then when screwing it tight.

If the cartridge is seated well it should rest ON those ridges and not between.

Taking a few measurements myself, the OAL of the cartridge should be 52mm (2 1/16") and should protrude from the nib section 38mm

(1 1/2") - as stated above.

Yes. My cartridge protrudes exactly 38mm (i.e. there's 38mm showing when I insert it into the nib section). So i'm guessing the barrel is wrong somewhere. When I get an "old style" cartridge I'll see if that makes a difference.

The 38mm was with the old style.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
