Please, What Ink Formula Makes A Waterproof Sanguine Color Ink?

Hi. I have been searching for that orange-red color, Sanguine (in waterproof form). I understand that red and yellow ink mixed does not always create an orange due to the possible chemicals that are in them. I'm on the edge in the search for this rust color, anyone discover a recipe that will match this?

I am without much knowledge when it comes to mixing chemicals. I am taking the poor man's approach and mixing some Noodler's Ink samples from Goulet Pen's. I am hoping to find something close to their Habanero and Dragon Napalm. Of course, it has to be waterproof and not turn into some type of gas or take on an immediate solid form. So far I have found an approximate mix of 45% Fox Red, 45% Catfish Orange and 10% Polar Brown to meet the above requirements but not the same exact color. The mixture has been in a 15ml vial for over 3 days now. When it was immediately applied to a Clairfontaine paper it had a porous look and I believe this was due to bubbles from the shaking these inks together inside that plastic vial (not shown).

3 Days Later: Some Noodler's Ink Colors on the Left and the Noodler's Ink mix on the Right (that "Sphinx" quote is that popular anagram - using all the letters in the English alphabet). The brush is pointing to where I added some water about an hour after it was applied - today. I am still trying to get the right ink color but I'll need to find a couple more different ink samples.

When you can get hold of them, you'll be able to mix a Sanguine using the De Atramantis Document inks. If you mix an orange with the document yellow and document red or perhaps with the document yellow and document magenta - make it a mid orange - and then add some document blue (not cyan) a very little at a time, I expect you'll get a great range of burnt orange/sanguine/burnt sienna colours. I can't try it yet as I don't yet have the yellow....but they will be lightfast and waterproof and fountain pen friendly!

Cheers,

Jane

I was going to suggest a DeA document ink mix. For your base, use Toucan yellow - it's a tad dry which is okay because the Doc Ink is wet. I think you'll be thrilled.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Document Yellow and it mixes a lovely range of Sanguine hues. You can see the mixes on my blog but for some reason I can't post the photos - 3 drops Document yellow, 1 drop Document magenta and a touch of Document blue is lovely for a burnt orange. Keep adding blue (not cyan) to make it the colour you want.

When I googled it, it gave a range of colors. If he's looking for a specific shade or hue, that would help.

Not sure what "he" you're referring to, but, for my part, I'm looking for the darker end of the range. Something toward Diamine Oxblood, but not quite that dark and with excellent shading.

That is awesome. Can you suggest a website that sells these inks? I am having a little difficulty finding the De Atramantis Document Inks in these 3 basic colors. Thanx.

You can also organize a group buy to cut down on shipping costs. If you do, I'll take a yellow.

I have ordered a whole bunch to be delivered to Sydney, Australia. They are just fantastic to mix and draw with. I am using a mixed and thinned grey at the moment and loving it. Another pen has a raw sienna but I think I'll switch it to a burnt sienna/sanguine so there is a bit more colour on the page :-)

Cheers,

Jane
