Experimenting With Gold (Powder)

I didn't find a problem until I let them dry out and "harden." YMMV.

Ah. Thanks. Will bear that in mind.

  • 2 weeks later...

After using glittered ink in the same pen for several weeks, I really, really don't recommend using it in a squeeze filler pen (the pen in question was a Pilot with their squeeze converter), the glitter/ink seems to stick to the sac and after several weeks of regular use there were obviously problems, I suspect from clumps of glitter drying in places and then breaking free to clog up the feed (I think a cleaning should fix this but it's a bit annoying when it happens in a meeting). A piston converter should be less susceptible to this problem since no part of the converter is a constant haven for ink to dry and stick too, like the top end of the squeeze converter is.

I also suspect that the settling contributes, the glitter ink settles very rapidly and even if I just put the pen down briefly I need to give it a quick shake to get the glitter mixed back in again when I pick it up.

In better news I haven't see any sign of mold in the glitter ink so that's making me very happy. My next experiment is to try and see how thin a nib can work with the glitter ink now that I know italics can handle it just fine.

There is glitter stuck to the piston in my Konrad but it has not caused any issues. I've still never cleaned the pen from whenever I posted the Kon-peki mix several months ago. It's dried out three times and after sucking up some water has written straight away.

This is really great to know. Thanks.

That's about what I expected then, I really think it's the soft sac and the way there's parts of the sac that never get effectively cleaned with the typical squeezing motion that causes the problem, thanks for confirming! Edited by WirsPlm

I've just had an apostrophe. (I think you mean an epiphany.) Lightning has just struck my brain. (That must have hurt.)

I want to know what happens when someone puts a butt-ton of lustre dust in Blue Ghost. Sure, you'd ruin the uv-only effect... But you could have a pen that literally writes ONLY IN GLITTER. *evil cackle*

I was just trying to decide what I should refill my Jinhao x450 Shimmering Sands with since I'm almost out of my gold mica + dragon napalm. You just answered that question. I'll mix some up tonight.

Probably the silver mica? Or maybe just the gold? Thoughts?

I dumped a load of Lustre Dust (from the Hobby Lobby baking section) into a Preppy loaded with Susemai Red Diamond and bleh. The particles get hung up in the fins (I think Platinum calls it a collector?) and only an occasional one or two make it onto the page. Interestingly there aren't ink flow problems at all, just no glitter flow. Carp.

"A load" was around 1/16th of a tsp. Next attempt will probably be with a Jinhao 599A.

And the Preppy I loaded with some Pearl Ex would not write at all until I really really really diluted everything.

It's all just weird.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

So, fair warning: this looks much, much cooler in the vial or in the feed than it does on paper.

1ml Noodler's Blue Ghost + a Dash of silver mica: NOODLER'S QUICKSILVER

Here's a :04 video of it in the vial:
That video is easily the coolest part of this combo, I'm afraid.
Blue Ghost dries absolutely clear, so most of the novelty is the surprise when you hit it with UV light. It looks like there's nothing there, and then *BAM* all of a sudden THERE'S WRITING!
Adding the mica totally removes that novelty. It's just sorta hard to read, and then when you hit it with the black light, the glow outshines any evidence of the mica in the first place.
Sorta hard to see...like there's too much glare...

BAM! There's writing, but no mica...
http://i.imgur.com/c7Kg5yO.jpg
No sparkle to speak of.

Anyway, it was a neat idea, MizBlackCrow, but doesn't pan out too well in person. I can't really think of when this would be useful.

SO COOL! So what happens when you write on black paper with it?

I don't have any black paper! Dag, I didn't think of that, actually. As with most of these mica inks, I think it'd probably look super sweet right after the pen was filled, but once it sat for a bit, the mica wouldn't be as pronounced.

My experience has been that it's..... really hard to get it to flow consistently. Which is, I suppose, why there aren't more glitter inks on the market. It actually took me forever to get any glitter OUT of the pens and onto the page. Took storing them nib-down overnight just to get one superglitter paragraph and go back to basically nothing. *grumble grumble*

What pens are you using? I've only put it through my Vac700, Lamy Vista, and Jinhaos. It's performed fairly well in all of them, though I've found that if it's been sitting long, it will do better if I shake up the mica and then "prime" the feed manually using the piston/converter.

Anyway, it's rarely as sparkly as when I first fill it, but I can usually get fairly consistent sparkle if I prime the feed. Have you tried that?

Some Lustre Dust finally worked through to the nib and onto the paper. It's not much but it's some success and I'm encouraged. For this particular brand of LD, I think something other than a Preppy would work better.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
