Sonnet Nib Problem

Chu0009

Recommended Posts

I have this parker sonnet nib. It was gift for a special occasion.

I used the loop and decided to have a look at the nib. The slit on the nib does not divide the nib tip into 2 separate equal tines and the tip is not even.

The flow is good but I often get skips and the unevenness is driving me nuts !

any suggestions on sorting this problem of mine? post-116166-0-44894200-1413124921_thumb.jpgpost-116166-0-27555200-1413124949_thumb.jpg

Hi there, any chance if you know the pen was sourced from an authorised dealer? I know that the Parker Sonnet is one of the most faked pens out there......The lettering for "Parker" on your nib looks quite rough from the pic (not sure if it is the blurry pic?) and is one of the telltale signs of faked Sonnets. Check out the link below:-

Return it for a refund or replacement, assuming you got it from a reputable dealer. If not, get another one. A nibmeister could perhaps grind it to a fine / extra fine nib, but would maybe cost more than a new nib.

I am no longer very active on FPN but feel free to message me. Or send me a postal letter!

That might be a fake Sonnet.

Not every nib is cut perfectly down the center. That alone doesn't indicate a fake.

The lettering on the nib tells me it is a fake. I have seen plenty of them.

Thanks for the link and comments. I got this pen from my father as a birthday gift. Bit hard to send it back to him.

I agree the lettering does look uncharacteristically rough and unlike parkers high standard finish and workmanship. Here are some more pics with areas to look out for according to the article link.post-116166-0-33857900-1413157543_thumb.jpgpost-116166-0-12241700-1413157558_thumb.jpgpost-116166-0-99922900-1413157586_thumb.jpgpost-116166-0-55257600-1413157604_thumb.jpgpost-116166-0-05885700-1413157622_thumb.jpg

My main point is that some genuine nibs are cut off center.

You may pronounce it a fake as you like.

The display of the pen closely helps if one has a reference sample to check it against. There is no comparison here.

Suit yourself, Pajaro. I have been dealing with pens for 46 years, I was a US distributor (professional) for some major brands and I know Chinese pens (I used to have some of my pens made in China). I have family in China and I have seen many, many fake Sonnets. In my opinion, the one in the pictures is a fake. You are free to disagree. This is just my opinion, based on a lot of experience in this field.

Well if it is still under warranty you may wish to take it to a store that is an authorised Parker Pen seller and see if it is a fake or not! If its genuine then get them to exchange the nib (not sure if Parker has that service worldwide...). That's real shoddy workmanship on a nib if it is a genuine one! I agree that not all nibs are cut evenly - I have an older Pelikan M400 Tortoise that has a similar thing but not as bad as that Sonnet that you have. It writes flawlessly though and is pretty smooth.

Hi all thanks very much for the comments.

I will get it to a parker dealer.

But I do feel unsettled about this pen. Nevertheless, It's a pen that now has sentimental value.

appreciated.

When I compared with my other sonnet silver, there's indeed a difference in workmanship. I will post my silver sonnet on another thread for comments. Dad gave me the silver one for my graduation some 20 yrs ago. He is a big parker fan !!!!

I am not a huge Parker fan, admittedly. Still, I have seen several new Parker pens with nibs that are less than perfect. Perhaps they were ALL fakes, I don't know. I do believe that if you get the nib replaced with one that is a proper nib, your pen will function very well. You will be able to retain the pen for which you have a sentimental attachment and have a correctly functioning fountain pen and all without having to tell your dad. Best of luck with your pen.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
