Repairing Cracks In Bhr

I recently aquired a very restorable Dunn Camel. (Love those huge old Dunns) that has a stable hairline crack in the cap from the lip going up and sideways. I've been told that an adhesive or solvent doesn't exist for closing cracks in vulcanite, but before I gave up on the idea, I thought I'd throw out the question to the gathered wisdom of the forum.

 

Plan A is still to epoxy on a brass ring which would be consistent with some old camel styles, to stabilize the crack and provide support.

 

Any other ideas for bringing this big girl around? The pump system is covered, so the only thing on this one is to get the crack.

Thanks for the info! I'll check into the Liquide Weld product if I can get it shipped here from the UK. Since it is a very fine hairline I'd rather like to avoid working the inside line of the crack. I'm still thinking a brass ring might still be a better idea...

Well, they say that some days even a blind squirrel finds a nut.... It turns out that old fashioned superglue did the trick. You can still see the crack, but it's chemwelded solid. I've restored the lil pump and the ol girl is as right as rain, though it still shows that she's 80 plus... Writes nice too! A stiff manifold fine Dunn... I'll post some pics when it isn't so late. Yawn!

 

BTW

Laurence Oldfields book said a thing about ebonite and super glue.... Turns out the previous owner had stabilized the crack with some scotch tape. I guess it kept the crack fresh enough that the superglue took... Better to be lucky than good most days!

Thanks Chrissy for the offer of help! Turns out they do ship to the U.S.! It's in the shopping basket now... Never have too many tools in the chest!

 

So here she is in her repaired glory and writing like a champ. Got the cork replaced with some modern o-rings and we're good to go!

 

Crack still shows but it is strong and stable
