Pilot 78G Vs. Nemosine Singularity

Recommended Posts

So I'm looking to pick up another fountain pen, and I'm torn between Pilot's 78g and Nemosine's Singularity. In my collection I already have two Lamy Safaris, a TWSBI Mini, and Noodler's Ebonite Konrad. I'm a college student so inexpensive but well performing pens are a must.

I've heard good things about both the Nemosine and Pilot pens here on PFN and around the web, and since they're similiar price points I'm really unsure which to get. I also really love the more classic styling of these two pen bodies.

I've heard of some cracking issues with the Singularity, has anyone had any such problems with their 78g? Or does anyone greatly suggest one over the other (and if so, why?)

The 78g comes stick with a tiny ink sac. You have to buy the con50 or con70 separately so factor that in. The Nemo looks like it has a good ink capacity on its own

I haven't used the Singularity, but the 78G was of my first FPs. It worked straight out of the box, but I just opened the tines a bit, since I like my pens to be on the wetter side. It's my dedicated BSB pen. I'd get the CON-50 converter though, since I can never tell how much ink I have left with that sac converter thing it comes with.

I've used both, and with the nibs they come with, the 78G's medium, fine or broad is much smoother than the Nemosine nibs I've used.

Also I prefer pilot's filling especially if syringe filling a cartridge because of the wider opening on them. Though a Nemosine Singularity (particularly the demonstrator) can be used as an eye dropper.

The only time I stuck with using a Singularity was when I paired it with a goulet 1.5 stub nib, but that makes it nearly twice the cost, so again Pilot 78G wins in my opinion as it's less the cost, and smoother the nib.

Tiny? The Con-20 style converter holds more than a standard international converter and cartridges. The Pilot cartridges hold about 0.9ml versus standard international of about 0.48ml. (or around 0.5-0.6 of a standard international converter) The Con-50 piston style converter is about the same (0.6ml or so), but easier to clean than most standard international converters and doesn't have a bottle neck of flow at the nipple due to the wider opening.

Con-70 won't work in a 78G it only works in about 3 or 4 pilot pens which tend to be the more expensive ones like a Metal Pilot Falcon.

I have and occasionally use both. The only comparison is in price. While it took several months my Singularity now has the cap lips cracks so often mentioned. Functionally it operates well after a very thorough cleaning and does give an EF line (as thin as my Penmanship EF). All of my 78g's worked right away, after a quick flush as I give all my pens. The B and BB nibs wrote dry in the beginning, F and M seemed about perfect.

My Singularity experience is one pen. I have more than 10 78g's and several other Pilots with that sized nib. I am an admitted fan of Pilot pens and don't think buying one of their products will be cause for regret.

A Metal Elabo is a Metal Falcon... so it's a bit redundant to mention. And I am talking bout ones normally available retail in the US.

It's also quite a bit besides the point, it won't work in a 78G.

I only said that so to prove there are less expensive pens with the Con70 and so other viewers can see some of the other options for the Con70 pens.

Not saying the 1377 USD pen is the "best" option if you want a con70.

I've both the Singularity (1) and the 78g (five or six). I gave away the Singularity to someone just starting to use fountain pens, have kept all the 78g's; for me, it's just a nicer pen to write with.

Well thank you everyone for all the replies. I think I'm going to order a Pilot 78g with a medium nib. If I end of really loving it I'll probably order some more in other colours and nibs.

I wasn't sure for the C74 because when I looked at the product pictures it shown a CON50. So if it's uses a Con70 it means at 84USD it's the cheapest CON70 pen.

What is a Legance?

Legance is a #5-nibbed special line that is superficially similar to the CH91 but has a cool flake material and is a little more compact, with a cooler looking clip.

Anyway, I don't like trying to clean ink out of the tiny bulb area at the butt end of the CON70. The main tube is simple enough, but that tiny little (glass?) part at the back is just such a pain to clean unless you can take the mechanism apart (not just removing the main tube). I plugged a CON20 in my grey sparkle C74 and it works well.

But they're all still about $150+ which I don't consider particularly inexpensive (especially compared to the $10 78G :P)

:P But the Con-20 is pretty sufficient just lacks showing the current ink level. And the con-50 is about on par with most piston-style C/C filling capacity, but seems to have better flow compared to standard international since the feed is the only bottleneck and not the c/c nipple/opening.

I can see (or feel) the ink level perfectly fine. On the Con20 just poke the sac and feel how hard it is. If it's very hard or stiff it means that it's filled with liquid.* But now if it's soft it's time for some fun time of filling the converter with a few pushes.

*(Stiff goes to liquid sludge like inks and hard goes for cleaning liqiuds or watery inks. You know stiff when you feel it. Try loading up KTC in a con20.)

I somehow feel that I sort of made this more adult like.

I put a ball in my Con20s and Con10s to prevent that air bubble that some times forms due to rapid ink usage. I only noticed this on my Justus95 to get a air bubble right above the feed nipple.

I have been using a pilot 78g for more than 2 years and I own quite a few of them. To me there is no substitute to this pen at this price.

1.A screw on cap for better protection.

2. Tough body which has no cracking issues and looks classy.

3. Con20 convertor stores good amount of ink.

4. The variety of nibs f,m,b and bb. Medium writes really smooth.

5. Available in 4 colours pick ur choice. Black looks very classy and one can't say that it's an inexpensive pen.

6. This pen could also be converted into an eye dropper.

7. The grip section is very comfortable to hold. Fits in almost all palm sizes.

8. Never had any leaking issues ever.

9. The gold plating does not wear off that easily.

10. It's a pen I carry in meetings and even on outings with friends and it fits in.

I carry two of them with me every day,one black and one teal along with my waterman expert and I use it for signing, writing notes, jotting down accounts, and even writing my journal. Parker quink blue and lamy blue work superb with this pen.I also use pelican royal blue and camlin royal blue with it.

I suggest irrespective of u buy a singularity or not just pick one 78g for urself. You won't regret it.

Enjoy :-)
