Ever Dropped A Valued Fountain Pen?

I'm just curious, what would be/has been your first course of action to take when a, say, MB 149 falls... Conveniently, on its tip? I've dropped a pilot penmanship before, and it completely ruined the nib. I'm glad it was cheap; I thought, what would happen if it was my Custom Heritage!?

So for the seasoned FP Collector, have you ever dropped a high priced fountain pen? What happened to it and how did you fix it?

Unfortunately, this has happened to me. Not a real high priced pen, but still one that was $300 *sigh*. I have a Lamy Dialog 3, (the retractable nib model). As it is tube shaped with the nib deployed, I set it on a table, and sure enough, the pen rolled off and hit the ground tip first *double sigh*.

Needless to say, it was worth it for me to send it to Lamy for 14K nib replacement. Though a little impractical, I still love using the pen. I find it impractical in the sense eventhough it is a capless pen, it still requires two hands to deploy, unlike the Pilot VP models I own, (the older plastic faceted one and a newer yellow version). That and the sealing mechanism is not as air tight as the VP's. I love the feel and smoothness of nib though and I appreciate the clean lines of the pens.

More than once in the last 56 years. The Cross Townsend got a new nib, the Lamy 2000 a trip to Gregg Minuskin, other cheaper pens the trash can. I remember really appreciating the screw in nib feature of Esterbrook.

I dropped my Justus95 while trying to twist the body off. Good thing the pen has a decent balance that it landed sideways.

I dropped my Dialog 3 as well last weekend at the pen show, albeit, capped. Aside from some ink splattering inside the barrel, no harm done. My only real gripe with mine is that it has to be periodically greased to keep the internals running smoothly.

Calculating.

So far so good. At least one has hit the floor. All escaped nib damage.

A couple of years back I'd just bought a Waterman Expert II from WHSmiths at half price.

sk - it landed nib down and looked like Greek Soldier's slipper. Pliers and a prayer, it's been fantastic ever since. Very lucky.

(I never have posted my pens)

I let my 149 felt down twice ...... First time, in a restaurant taking my wallet of my pocket, my 149 came with it and ..... Felt down on the floor. Result :broken in two pieces at the ink window ..... Nearly 150 to repair it ......

Second time, I put it on my desk while speaking to a client : it rolled and felt one more time on the floor : broken blind cap ..... I glued it and it´s nearly impossible to see that it has been repaired ..... My black Starwalker also felt down (also rolling out of the desk) and has now a small hairline fracture ....

As I use it, of course, I sometimes drop it ..... But it's better to use it than to let it sleep, no ?

Yep. More than a few times. As far as I can recall, no catastrophic losses.

Lost a few Pelikans and Sheaffers from the collar of my shirt, too. Huh, I'm realizing there might be a connection to my preference these past several years for clipless pens. Haven't lost any of those. I'm not even going to say "yet."

I have dropped a couple of them, though. Urushi is a very durable material, thank goodness.

FYI: A Parker Duofold Senior is too big for the shirt pocket. That's where I carried mine.

I leaned over to pick up something. The Big Red hit the floor horizontally, with a "kerrrrrrack !"

The cap shattered. :crybaby:

A Montblanc 1950's celluloid 142 the small one in the family, that i've had for less than a month, i have no idea how it rolled off the desk through my hands and on to the floor, when i saw the splotches of ink in the floor i feared the worst, thankfully it's still writes great and no cracks that i can see.

How long is it gone already? Ink might be all crusted up.

Just a couple of days... And I have to find it soon so I can take some pictures to illustrate a new thread that I will call "The long road to Lamy 2000 love" ;)

Curses! I knew I shouldn't have fed it Montblanc ink!

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
