Missing Pictures - Very Annoying

Recommended Posts

I like to make use of the pen reviews when I am interested in making a new purchase but I get frustrated to open review after review to find that all the pictures have been removed. Sometimes the whole review is left with nothing but box after box advising: "Sorry - This person removed or deleted this image"

In many ways I feel that it would be better for the original poster to just remove the review rather than to leave it totally devoid of the pictures that are referred to.

Does anyone else find this annoying?

Me and a lot of users, I believe. But then I do understand people leave, delete their accounts on photobuckets or other photo sharing sites.

I believe it's impossible for FPN to support and store this crazy amount of photo (.jpg files) on the servers.

FPN should change its policy. Either it should allow all images to be hosted on its server or no images. For many it becomes very frustrating when their FPN limit exceeds - so they start deleting old images - and that would hamper older reviews.

If FPN does not want to host images, it should come out with an FAQ where and how people can host images and then embed it on FPN.

Personally i found it initially very confusing but ultimately was able to host on Flikr and embed in FPN reviews.

FPNs policy of limited image hosting I find very unrealistic. It encourages to compromise on quality of previous posts and reviews

I have removed photos when I reach the FPN limit, but I try to do it in a way that will cause least inconvenience to others. For instance, where I have posted several images of a pen, I will remove just one of those images and leave the rest. I will also sometimes remove images which are not pen-related.

FPN hosts images and allows unlimited uploads. Just upload your pics here:

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/ihost

and copy/paste the image url with correct bbcode in your post.

Many folks use the "attach image" feature, this has a quota and then they run into problems.

In case you wish to write to me, pls use ONLY email by clicking here. I do not check PMs. Thank you.

I did a large amount of reviews and then managed to accidentally delete the images from Flickr one day, which doesn't allow you to re-upload. I re-did the reviews as I was annoyed thatmy posts were missing the images (see sig), but you're being a little unfair to people who post something on what is, after all, a transient ever-morphing platform (the internet).

I don't have an upload button on any page in FPN. Nor do I have any sort of "attach" button in the message reply window. My only option is to include a URL of an image hosted someplace else. I followed that link you provided to a "Manage Uploads" page, but there is no way to upload anything. There are no buttons or links to add or upload anything. Just a blue title bar that says "Manage Uploads" with nothing else.

FWIW, I've tried logging in with both Chrome and Firefox with the same results.

Am I doing something wrong???????

This at least brings inmediatly a fundamental question for this thread or for fpn if you want. Which is the better photo of a fountain pen in fpn ?, I mean which one gives the most information available for that fountain pen?, I mean just the nib, or the nib and section, or the nib section and barrel, caped or uncaped, those are questions I always ask myself whenever I post in order to reduce the charge in bytes to this site. Again, you can upload whatever number of photos here just in everyone never surpas the 999kb required.

This is my limited perspective.

When forums are set up they ONLY work if enough users create content for other users to see, that snowballs bringing more "eyeballs" to the site.

Its up to the owners of the forums to monetize- IF they want to, hosting and backup cloud servers are dirt cheap these days.

People are visual, Pictures draw eyeballs, if pictures are gone content value goes down. Why rely on 3rd parties flickr to float your forum?

Just did a huge pic heavy post, had to set up a flickr account. Post on a dozen or so forums I am interested in NEVER have I see such a ghetto site as to bar pic uploading to their servers.

DID I get paid for taking an hour of my time to do this? NO.

So owners pony up some cash and get a bigger server or shut the site down.

I am making you money by creating a resource for you to make money with- the least you can do is help ease my burden of content creation.

Think I am going to post another review here? hells no- its too much problem.

Thank you for letting me vent and giving unsolicited advice.

Once you have logged in, you should be able to locate the upload button as per following screen shots. If you are unable to locate it, send a PM to wimg, the owner of this website for further clarifications. The following screen shots are uploaded to the FPN upload server and linked from there.

after you have uploaded, you will see the links to the image, copy and paste them with the correct BB code and you are done.

Thanks, Hari, but I don't have those options (I did figure out how to attach images to individual posts). Below is what I see. As I tried in Chrome for Mac, Firefox for Mac, and IE for Windows and see the same thing, it must be a permissions thing. Maybe I need to have a certain number of posts before that gets turned on. I'll message wimg for info.

I see the upload feature, but I didn't realise what it was for!

KreepyKen, I think you're right - you need to have posted to FPN a minimum number of times before you see the upload button.

I have the same options as you do. I am assuming it's because we're only Bronze members. I'm not sure about you, but I have not hit my 30-day membership yet. It's nice to know that there is/will be (hopefully) an option to upload. I had a hell of a time figuring out how to use image upload sites. I'm not sure if they keep the images forever, either (since I do not have an account). I'd hate to have to re-do all of the pictures in some of my posts.

Hi,

I agree about the disappointment of 'lost' images.

As I prefer to keep some level of control over the images I created, I use a host where they can be deleted or modified as I choose. e.g. When an ink that I've reviewed changes or is discontinued, I could modify the first image (swabs) in that Ink Review to broadcast that message, especially as Topic content is locked some time after posting; and even though the Ink Review Index entry could be modified, not everyone accesses Ink Reviews through that portal. Or as has happened twice, I've been pranked by the ink itself, so the images were invalid, hence deleted.

If my image host account or I were to expire, I intend the contents or the account itself be transferred to FPN, and let the site Owners/Administrators take it from there.

If FPN were to expire, it wouldn't take an insurmountable effort by me or my minions to make those images available somewhere else in the ether.

Bye,

S1

Speaking of vanishing images, lately images in recent posts by Hari and a few others have been invisible to my browser. Is anyone else having this problem? It may be an issue with my firewall.

I'm so glad someone has raised this issue. It's very frustrating to see images have been removed regardless of whether this is in a review or in an old penmanship thread (it really helps to be able to see a sample of the penmanship being discussed).

When you do have the Upload link it might be hidden under "More" as it is in my browser. This may be because I have the page slightly zoomed in (short-sighted!).

Well luckily, I have my own domain, so I was able to just put my pictures there and link to them.

So, those of you who think that FPN should provide unlimited storage space for photos.... Have you donated to help cover the cost? TANSTAFL

It must be a really great life when missing images rises to the level of "very annoying".

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
