Removing Labels From Platinum Preppy. What Do I Use?

Just purchased a set of platinum preppy's and looking to convert them into eyedroppers. What can i use to remove the labels from the clear plastic barrel. I search throughout the forums and the answers and inconclusive. So i want to ask if this product here would do the trick? I live in Australia.

Would Methylated spirits be useful in removing the labels? Are the same as denatured alcohols?

I scratch mine off with a knife... It leaves some scratches although not very visible.

Straight acetone should work. Or nail polish remover (basically acetone too). Might have to rub it a little with a coarse dish scrubber sponge or something...

Sticky Stuff Remover - brilliant stuff for removing labels and all sorts of messes. Smells nice too!

If the label has been on for a while, I soak it and leave it for a bit. The label will come off, usually leaving a sticky residue. apply some more SSR and it will come as clean as a whistle. I've used it on all sorts of surfaces and it has never caused a problem.

Straight acetone should work. Or nail polish remover (basically acetone too). Might have to rub it a little with a coarse dish scrubber sponge or something...

While acetone will certainly remove the glue, it might damage the plastic as well.

Not a real problem on a Preppy, but on your very expensive pens with precious resin etc I would definitely NOT recommend it.

 

I think Nafta would be better on plastic, but I would not use that on Celluloid or Hard Rubber either...

On a Preppy-- I'd give cooking oil a go. It's relatively benign, easily cleaned off with soap, and is a good way of getting sticky residue off things that don't mind getting oil on them. Once you've got a corner of the sticker up, small amounts and gentle tugging with occasional wipes using a paper towel, and you'll get there in the end.

Just curious, on my preppy`s is no label to peel, the print is directly printed on the plastic. I tried the mentioned methods, nothing works without serious damage so I gave up.

True. I should also mention that I've never held a Preppy in my hand. Not sure if its a sticker or silk screen printed on the tube or a type of heavy paint or what...

It's silk screen right on the barrel, and it's quite a bit of printing, so I can see why someone would want to remove it, especially if they have one of the naked ones from Noodler's to compare it with.

 

I haven't tried to get mine cleaned. I bought it, and it sits unused. Poor lonely Preppy.

I found out Diamine Registrars ink will melt off the label. I have no idea what is in that that does that.

If that's repeatable, there's some folks around here who'll buy a bottle just for that. Isn't that an iron gall? I wonder if any IG would work...

I've not done it with a preppy, but I have used acetone to remove the paint from Pilot Varsities. Works fine, with a little vigorous rubbing.

 

 

Two things about the Varsity. 1) I wish the barrel were a little clearer, and 2) There's plenty of room for more ink in there; I wish Pilot had increased the capacity of the pen.

The issue with more ink is that it also means more air when the pen is low, which means more likelihood of the pen burping and spurting ink out. That's to be avoided. Preppy eyedroppers do that badly.

 

The Pilot Non-Self Filling Pen blocks part of the back of the pen, possibly for the same reason.

I had some IG leak out and I noticed it after it dried so I used some water to rub it off and the label came off the area where the ink dried. That is the moment I had second thoughts about giving this ink to more pens.

 

Ink to remove ink that is a very odd plan.

 

 

But there must be a active ingredient in that we can normally buy without using expensive ink to erase ink. That bottle is 29 USD per 100ml.

I just checked. The preppy has a printed/painted on logo/barcode etc. So no stickers.

Chances are high acetone will make the clear plastic barrel milky and rough-surfaced.

 

Perhaps paint-thinner, the stuff you use to clean paintbrushes in, will work. Don't have that in the house so I can't try.

Hi, I used isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol and the rough side of a dishwashing sponge as noted above. A little elbow grease and you're done.

Thank you for confirming my above statement.

 

 

I now can confirm Nafta DOES work.

Best use some not too smooth tissue paper, make a small wad, dab some Nafta and some elbow grease. In the end use a clean one again to remove the cloudy haze left by the white paint/ink that got spread out.

EDIT: and be careful, the stuff is inflammable!!!!!!
