Sorry for the delay; I always think I'm going to get more done than I actually do. Hope this helps in your decision-making.

Can I try a Vac? I have a gift certificate burning a hole in my pocket and don't know if I should order another 580 or not.

Amber's 540 with the Pendleton Brown nib is flying back home. I'd been thinking about getting a 580 and using Amber's decided me.

I really like the weight, balance and size of the 540/580; it's not my biggest pen but it's darn big compared to the Estie Js and LJs I love. It's comparable to a Sheaffer Javelin in length, girth and weight. I prefer writing with it unposted and it doesn't need to be posted to feel properly settled in my hand; it's also plenty long without posting it. I like the look of the faceted barrel; the facets aren't sharp enough to be uncomfortable and they make the ink look all sparkly. It's just a pretty pen.

The Pendleton Angel nib mod is pretty wonderful. It's not as wet a writer as Art's Tomahawk and it does have more spring. I wouldn't call it a flex or semi-flex mod - more flexy or springy. I also have a Mini and that nib was great right out of the box.

I love the fact that you can totally disassemble TWSBIs for cleaning or greasing the piston. If you watch the Goulet video on how to take them apart and put them back together you can't go wrong.

I really wish I had gotten an M nib instead of an F. I have some inks that are anemic in an F but really gorgeous in an M or B (I'm looking at you, Larmes de Cassis). I got the rose gold 580 and want a matching nib; since I don't see the rose gold nib units for sale, I have an email in to Pendleton Brown to see if he will sell me an M nib unit with the Angel mod. If he can't do that I've also emailed TWSBI - if they can sell me one I'll send it to Art (ArtsNibs) so he can work his magic on it.

Such a great pen for $70. I bought a Pelikan M400 at the same time and, to my chagrin, I like the TWSBI better. (I like the Pelikan just fine, though :) )

Edited due to fat-fingering my phone.

Now that I have my very own 580, I wonder can the section un-thread so I can fill it with ink remaining in a sample vial?

I searched threads and web, can't get a clear answer.

My latest ebook.   And not just for Halloween!

My other pen is a Montblanc.

Yes, just unscrew it. Hold the top metal band while you unscrew it, otherwise the section will just spin and spin. The section will come off with the nib and feed, exposing a hole to fill from. You'll need a syringe, most likely. From that point, you can also pop the nib and feed out of the plastic section.

Thanks! Top metal band? You don't mean the one nearest the nib? (I'm away from the desk at the moment).

I got some samples that are just waiting. ^^

The one nearest the nib. It's more of a sleeve, I guess. The metal you can see in my photo.

Okay, got it. Thanks again.

This should be fun. Wish me luck!

I should also point out that a lot of the cracking issues are from putting the nib collar in incorrectly. If you look closely there are 2 (I think) little cutouts/tabs that align to the feed. Make sure you line them up - the collar will still slip into position if they're not and stress the plastic.

Okay, I can't find the email where the people wanted to borrow 700s. If you PMed me before, can you PM me again with the same PM so that it has the date. I'll try and keep these in order.

I'm just unscrewing the section, not removing nib/feed...is that still likely to occur?

I haven't had any troubles and I'm exactly that sort of awful user who decides to fill it like it were an eyedropper.

Been using an Amber-Loaner Artified Tomahawk 540 for about a week with KW#25 green and have been enjoying the soft, flexy nib that the Tomahawk becomes. Unfortunately, I am not good with cursive, really, so I can't really utilize the nib's ability all that well for pretty writing. Here is an ink comparison page that I made with that pen and some others that I own:

Probably not, but sometimes the feed collar can back out since the barrel is what keeps it snug. Essentially, don't force anything and you should not have any issues. Have fun and enjoy!

No...someone has my PB. I was going to loan out the 700 that just arrived today, but I'll need it back quickly because I'll want to see if PB can do his magic.
