I should also point out that a lot of the cracking issues are from putting the nib collar in incorrectly. If you look closely there are 2 (I think) little cutouts/tabs that align to the feed. Make sure you line them up - the collar will still slip into position if they're not and stress the plastic.

Update: section wouldn't unscrew. I was scurd to 'ape' it, so I tried sucking ink up from the vial. Didn't work. Tried to unscrew section again. This time it worked. But the collar flew off! It's invisible! Dumped ink (Iro Shin-Kai) through hole via pipette. Found collar. Put back.

 

Hope I aligned it right and didn't break it!

Just checked mine to take a picture and it doesn't have the two tabs. Must only be present on 580s without the metal nib collar.

Had a recent run in with a stubborn (aka "stuck") piston ring unit in one of Amber's 540 loaners. In retracting the piston knob, I pulled the piston rod out of connection with the ring unit. After I got permission from her to take it all apart, I ran some vegetable oil down the barrel and let it settle around the rings, then I pushed the piston head back out the backend of the pen with a straightened paper clip (and an ink syringe needle) and then soaked and cleaned the pen for an hour. Now it's all clean and lubed and working again just great.

 

The Tomahawk nib has been quite reliable and consistent.

Hi Amber,

I've been using a Metro for a while and have been looking for something new to get. I've looked at the TWSBI but have been a little put off by some of the posts concerning cracking. I'd be interested in borrowing one if possible. Medium if available and hopefully a pen that posts.

Amberlea and ALC321 I just stumbled upon your thread and began reading the posts. What a wonderful thread and great idea building on the Estie Loaner program idea. Sharing Pendletons modified nibs is also a wonderful way to share exposure to what a steel nib can do once adjusted, tuned or ground by an expert.

 

I may have missed an up close picture of the tomahawk nib could you share a picture of it please?

Rob Maguire (Plse call me "M or Mags" like my friends do...)I use a Tablet, Apple Pencil and a fountain pen. Targas, Sailor, MB, Visconti, Aurora, vintage Parkers, all wonderful.

For a posting TWSBI, you will want to try a mini. I don't have a mini in my collection. I have a mini that belongs to another person, but that's another story.

 

Meanwhile, I will be back in Las Vegas on Tuesday. You are a new member, but I still loan to new members (see the rules posted in the first message). The Pendleton nib is out on loan --- hey, how has that one? The Art nibs are the majority of my pens and I love Art's work.

 

I'll report more when I return to town.

I have someone to whom I'm supposed to send a loaner. I've forgotten. I can't find my Pendleton nib. I think it's in the box of stuff I was moving around in my office.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
