P61 Broad Italic

Ruth:

It's the much easier to live with convertor version.

In fact, it's a Mk3 with a fully metal cap jewel, a clip that's separate from the jewel and a metal barrel jewel (my other Insignia is a Mk2 c/c with a celluloid cap & barrel jewel insert and a clip that's part of the cap jewel housing). The sale date indicates it was fairly late in the P61's model life, confirmed by the manufacturing style of the jewels. The c/c style is the mid-late 70's/early '80's squeezy cartridge style. Also right for the age stated.

Michael:

That P51 looks gorgeous. It looks a bit oblique too, or is that an artefact of the photography?

Regards,

Richard.

This thread is making me SUPER ENVIOUS.

Me too.

A friend of mine (who I'm not sure has found his way here to FPN yet) posted a photo of his latest acquisition on Facebook -- a Parker 51 with what looked like an oblique stub. He thought it was Plum (on top of that) -- I didn't, but talked him into coming down to a pen club meeting the other night to show it off (and so I could compare the color with my believe-it-to-be Plummer and also a burgundy 51 Special. Turned out, his is Burgundy, not Plum (but has now pretty much convinced me mine *is* the Real Deal); the nib on his, however, is really sweet (although someone else suggested he send it off to be tuned, since the hood and nib are slightly misaligned).

Karl keeps blaming me for sucking him into the -- er, hobby. But since he has mostly Sheaffers, and got enamored of desk sets, I renounce any and all responsibility. The 51 fever, OTOH, yeah, he *can* blame me for that....

PS to Richard -- the converter version 61 may be "easier to live with". But I've been using mine since I got home from DCSS with just running distilled water through it and writing with what comes out (dunno what it is, but it's a very nice blue black) and was told by another guy at the meeting that I could very easily be writing with the pen and whatever ink was left in the capillary filler till the end of the year! Yeah, once it's well and truly flushed, it will probably end up being a one-ink pen. But I have several of those already  (oh look, an excuse to buy more pens :lticaptd: -- just don't tell my husband...).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

That 61 is like a Grail Find.

My first thought on looking at the section picture was Sponge Bob Square Pants.

Earlier in the year I snagged this 61 and its nib from E-Bay. I kept blowing up the picture below (from the listing), hoping that I was seeing what it looked like I was seeing. I put in my bid, hoped for the best and won at less than $40. It is a 1.3 mm stub and it writes wonderfully. It makes my poor handwriting look great and I find I use it now for almost everything. It has become a grail pen I didn't know I was seeking.

That's a nice looking nib too.

I wonder what sizes Parker did for the P61?

I have never seen a full list for the P61. There were a huge number of nibs for the P51, but I have rarely seen anything other than F/M/B up for sale in a P61.

Richard.

I think Parker must have added extra types at some point, otherwise the 1.3 and 1.5mm nibs wouldn't have occurred - I'm sure they are factory nibs.

The reason I'm sure they are factory nibs is that it's only relatively recently that someone like Greg Muniskin has been adding tips to P51 type nibs, and even then I've never seen a P61 nib attributed to him [or anyone else] despite the fact many people are pleased to show off such nibs; they are not cheap & they are a wonder to behold.

Just judging from my example, I'd tend to agree. Mine is an obviously used example, sold by someone who didn't even mention the nib in his ebay listing. I have to think that a pen with custom and expensive nib work would advertise that fact to the world. Also, is even Mr Muniskin up to the challenge of dealing with the 61's delicate shell?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
