How To Use A Small But Expensive Notebook?

Keyless Works

Recommended Posts

I have had this notebook sitting on my desk for a week and I just cannot figure out how to use it.

I had to have a few small Hermès pieces repaired by the Hermes craftsman in San Francisco and I decided to drop off an agenda cover than I haven't use in a long time. Well $125 later I felt compelled to use it but since August isn't the right time to buy an agenda refill I went with a blank notebook instead (they were out of the ruled version).

It's approximately 8cm x 12.5cm and if it cost $10 I would just fill it up with to-dos or grocery lists but since it costs $35 I don't want to use it like a regular notebook that I toss in the trash when filled. It is too small for a journal/diary...

Are you a photographer? Use it to record data for each shot.

List aspirations and goals, then check them off when accomplished.

With such a lovely cover, I personally would use such a notebook for some special notes. It is a bit small (3x5"), so that means things should be even more special. Maybe each day you write a love note to your partner, but don't show them, and then you can present them with the notebook as a gift when you've filled it up.

Or if you're a religious person, perhaps your feelings towards the divine (which may end up being much like love notes).

I'm sure there are many other ways to such such a notebook.

What a lovely idea! I might just have to steal that one for myself.

As for the original question, how about using it to write down quotes or short passages from literature/magazine articles (like a miniature commonplace book)?

Or, if you have any health-related goals, a health journal, to keep track of exercise goals or hours slept or what-have-you. Good to look back on many months later to see how far you've come.

Or use it to learn a new language or expand your vocabulary. Anytime you're in line at the store or waiting somewhere, you can just take a few minutes to read through the words you wish to learn.

Or a pen/ink diary.

Or a Book of Lists (see this book for a fascinating look at lists throughout the ages).

The love note idea is excellent! I think I will give that a shot. Thank you.

Good ideas. I have a workout journal, a daily budget journal, a pen journal with lists of pens and pen books that I have and want to acquire.

I also have a book full of my "unroyal warrants" for manufacturers of clothing, leather goods, flatware, dinnerware, glassware, appliances, knives, paper, furniture, alcohol (not wine, I have a spreadsheet for that), nibmeisters, pen resources and even laundry detergent.

I think I need to get that book on lists.

Maybe write quotes or ideas that inspire you. So when you are down, you can go through your little expensive journal and cheer up :).

Oh, that's a great idea. I like that.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I love this idea, too. I have notes here and there in my planner with the names of brands of items that really work for me (olive oil, local coffees, etc) but I love the idea of dedicating one notebook for this.

I use a small journal to keep around when inspiration strikes (e.g business idea including first research). Nothing more satisfying than capturing that fleeting moment of insight before it is gone (like in the middle of the night).

And a good idea (plus execution of course) may be priceless!
