This is one of 3 pens I have been looking for for well over 2 years now. I have almost aquired a pen like this on 3 seperate occasions but I was either too late and someone already bought it or the person didnt accept Paypal. This pen has been haunting me with wicked dreams and numerous Night Terrors. When I finally aquired this pen at the show, I have to thank Winedoc for keeping his eyes and ears out for the Ban-ei pens, especially this one!!!!

Kevin actually located 2 Ban-ei pens that I have been searching for. This one, which is called the Ban-ei Kamakura-bori finish and the Ban-ei orange/red urushi finish. I couldnt believe my eyes and luck when I saw them for sale. I am usually very unlucky and whenever we buy lottery tickets, I have the wife buy them and hold on to them because as soon as I touch them, I jinx them and we never win, NEVER!!!!

So I had to pinch myself when I saw them, I believe it was a consignment deal that Steve and Maryann Zucker were selling for someone else. So when Kevin saw the pens, he let Steve and MaryAnn know that I will be around to either look at them or straight up buy them or at least the Kamakura-bori. So as I was walking around to where Kevins table was, he told me that someone is wating for me to look at a pen. So when I went over there, I saw both pens and before I could say anything else, "I'LL BUY EM" came right out of my mouth!!!!!!!! So now I have 4 down and 1 more to go, so I can collect the whole series. The last one I am looking for is the Black Bamboo Urushi Ban-ei. So if anyone has one that they want to see, let me know!!! Please, so I can stop the madness!!!! laugh.gif

All my Ban-ei pens are inked and are used on a regular basis!! They are fantastic writers!!!

Enjoy

Thanks for the kind words!!

I will shoot some more later on this week or this weekend. I am still hunting for the last one. To me, this is an important collection for anyone who loves japanese pens. The Ban-ei are the last of the pens that were made by the original maki-e and Urushi artists. As far as I know, they have all passed away and the style of these pens were that of the early part of the 20th century. From what i read and heard, everything was done by hand to include the nibs and the polishing. No machines for polishing, just the skilled hands of these artists.

Kevin is really a super guy!!! I especially love his Saturday night pen show get togethers!!! It really is a super time to get to know people you dont know and catch up on those people that you do know!!!

Here is a picture of Kev (Winedoc) and I at the 2007 LA Pen Show. This was was right next to his pen display. If you look closely at my shirt pocket, you can see the stress on the stitching as the weight of all the pens was pulling my shoulder down along with the pocket.

I managed to fit the following pens into this pocket:

Conway Stewart Churchill Lapis Blue

Conway Stewart Churchill LE Black chased ebonite

Montblanc 149

Montblanc Alexandre Dumas

Delta Dolce Vita OS

OMAS D-Day anniversary pen

My back was a bit sore at the end of the day!!! J/K laugh.gif

It was great meeting you and your Dad again. We sure have a great time. Glad I can fuel your addiction... yeah, I shouldn't talk. My Ban-ei are all nicely tucked away and you will not see them up for sale as I do treasure mine. Last I checked with Danitrio is that only very few pieces of the solid black ones left. For those who are not familiar with Ban-ei, they may also know these as pens made by Mr. Tsuchida. I have couple more of "non Ban-ei" pens by him and one is a red-banei prototype which I should treasure for long time to come.

Glad you like these pens and enjoy them in good health.

Best,

Kevin
