First Attempt. Reviews Please.

this is my first attempt at improving my handwriting. to do this i found an image on the forum page named 'depository of handwriting and calligraphy styles and discussion' and just tried to imitate it. iv only done a single page of the letter 'a'. this probably isn't a long enough time period to show thorough improvement but if you could tell me i'm going into the correct direction.

One thing i was asking myself while doing this tonight was 'how necessary is the small tip of the letter is?'

 

what i'm using-

• Rhodia A4 graph paper (5x5 squares)
• TWISBI Diamond 580 (M)
• Diamine Aqua Blue ink

I'm not sure what you mean by the 'small tip'.

 

It looks like you're writing these very slowly and labored. Perhaps a few rounds of lighter and faster would yield less constricted letters. These just look too uptight.

 

It would more helpful for you to post a couple of sentences as well.

It would help to know exactly what script you're trying to work on. In any case, a few things that you might find useful:

1) you're writing rather small for that nib

2) try and work on the script's fundamental strokes for a bit before doing letters

3) when you do letters, try writing alphabets and short phrases as well, don't do only endless pages of the same letter.

 

More importantly, keep it up! Huge improvements can be made with relatively little effort.

I also agree that the writing may be a bit small for the nib. I've just never found the graph pad line width any good for an M nib. I love western M & B nibs and never use anything with a line width smaller than 6mm.

Also, if you mean the ligature line right before you actually start the letter when you say 'small tip', I would day that having it depends on the person and their style. If you do choose to have that line, use it for all your letters for consistency.
