Pilot Elite(Vintage) - How To Clean?

Recommended Posts

I recently won/purchased a vintage Pilot Elite with an 18k SF nib, the pen is in good condition but could do with flushing.

Whenever I get a vintage pen I like to disassemble them as much as possible to clean and assess them but the Elite has me stuck. I found a page that says a special tool is needed to unscrew from the inside before the nib and feed can be taken out, can anyone offer any idea advice as to whether it's possible to disassemble an Elite without any tools or whether I'm better just flushing the pen as much as I can and leaving it at that?

I'm thinking a Con-20 converter should fit the Elite but can anyone advise on that too please?

Thanks :)

A flushing is really enough as long as nothing else is wrong with a pen. I'll take a guess that a CON-20 or 50 should do it.

Thanks  I've been flushing throughout the day and am almost getting clean run off, I'm a tad obsessive so I'm going for a completely clear run off :)

I hadn't considered the con-50 as I thought it might be too big but I have one in my Namiki Falcon so I'll give it a try before ordering a con-20

the retaining ring between the section and the barrel can indeed be removed you will probably need something hot if there's any gunk stuck on it like a heat gun at low setting or hot water its a screw type also you will need some gripping material hmm his

the tool specified looks a bit too simpple

Thanks for the pic

I managed to get the metal ring off easily but the plastic part that 'pops' the cartridge and holds it in place is also screw fit, I think the tool has a chunk missing that links with the plastic part so that you can unscrew it. I decided on just flushing the pen as I don't want to risk ruining it, after a few hours soaking the pen is clean and works brilliantly. The nib is soft and give a tiny amount of line variation and smooth for such a fine nib, for under £30 I think the pen is a bargain considering the new version costs £120 :D

I know that's somewhat old, but where the heck did he get the tool from? I got a clogged up Elite I just got and while I have the nib off, I need that tool to get the "nipple" section off.

Edit: Found this link where he disassembles the Elite itself, but the tool mentioned he made himself.

Fantastic link! Now I know what is wrong with my pen! Part of the "Feed retainer Cartridge Nipple" is broken. I guess that won't hurt my pen...am going to try to write with it.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
