What Does The 750 Indicate?

It's a simple question with a simple answer, but I'd like to know what the "750" that is often on a Waterman nib next to or close to the 18K mark. Thanks.

750=75% pure gold= 18k gold. Sometimes the nib is tamped just 18k, otherwise only 750. Sometimes both. It refers to the purity of the gold content, since they don`t usually make nibs out of pure gold(24K)

 

P.S. 14K gold is 585, some Parker 75 nibs are marked this way, without the 14K stamp.

That's interesting. I have always thought that these nibs were a steel base with gold plating, but with the 18K and/or 750 mark, the term "solid gold" is more accurate, even if it really is an alloy and not 100% gold.

Sailor makes a 21k nib. That's the highest gold content current nib I know of.

 

They require care in writing with and are easily pronged. Actually for adding Flex, most nibmesiters prefer < 18k nibs.

As Rochester21 says,it means that it is composed of 750 parts of gold per 1000.
