I'm going to pick up some copy paper at STAPLES but I admit I haven't really kept up with the consensus on their best offering.

What is the best readily available copy paper they carry?

thanks!

I've had good luck with the Staples store brand 'bright white letter size' Inkjet paper - 98 brightness, 90g/m2. I needed some writing paper one day, and it's what I had on hand for my printer, but I was surprised at how well it took to a fountain pen - no feathering or bleed-through, and fairly smooth to the nib. It's no Tomoe River, but works for me. I've heard the laser printer paper is better.

For writing, here are my choices

  • 20# Staples Sugar Cane based (holds up to everything that I've used on it...so far. But it is not as white as other paper.
  • 28# Hammermill Color Copy Digital (caution the 2 sides of the paper behave differently, especially for fine lines)
  • 32# HP Premium

The Staples store closest to me has samples of the different papers they have. Unfortunately, it seems to only be what's in the store, and the sugarcane based paper appears to be an online-only item.

It's not in a box - the ream comes wrapped in plastic. But if you told them what you were up to, they might a) give you some samples and B) maybe even have some suggestions. In any case, the paper I mentioned was on the order of $5/ream, so not a huge investment.

I was just there and saw a ream of resume paper on sale for half-price. I took it to the copy center in-store and asked if they had this paper and explained what I needed to find out. The lady went to a shelf of different papers and pulled out as heart and let. Me try it out. It worked great so I bought it. Worth a try asking.

Good to hear about the HP premium for 32#.

Thanks for your replies :)

The 32# HP Premium rings a bell, I remember seeing this one more than a few times here.

I'm going to see if they have it here, I'm interested in a off-white paper, it adds character to personal letters ;)

That's not a bad price at all! The last time I was in the store the associate was VERY willing to help, but he couldn't understand what I was trying to figure out (that could be my fault  ).

I have some resume paper that is really nice, it does hold up against feathering and bleed through, but OH MY is it scratchy! Which manufacture is yours?

One warning.

HEAVY papers like the 32# HP Premium are so thick that you cannot see a guide-sheet under the paper without using a light box.

I can just see the guide-sheet thru the 28# paper, but that is with the lamp positioned just right, and holding the paper down.

My guide-sheet has HEAVY lines, to make it easier to see thru heavy paper.

I run the paper through a printer and add a dot grid from http://incompetech.com. It works quite well for me. The dots are enough for me to keep my writing relatively straight, but are barely noticeable. And I'm able to set the spacing to fit my handwriting.
