Pelikan M400 White Tortoise Stains?

I've been taking a look at the Pelikan M400 White Tortoise shell fountain pen reviews, and have seen it written once that the white barrel and section stains easily with dark inks. Is this true, or can it be easily washed off? Thanks!

I have the Pelikan M400 White Tortoise, White M100, and White M205. I think it's really a matter of being smart with the inks. I use very water solvent, gentle inks and try to avoid staining inks like reds and purples. This stratagem has worked well for me and I have no stains on the white parts. I think that if you're good about keeping your pen well maintained, staining shouldn't be a problem.

Have you tried using a Lamy black in it? Would you say that black inks would be somewhat dangerous to the pen in terms of staining?

Hmm, this is a good point, I have a few White tortii (?) that i was thinking about using for the first time and a stained tortoise would not be good, and images of such are around.

Pity because all my favourite inks are reds and purples.

Anyone suggest a safe ink guranteed not to stain?

I have not tried Lamy black but Pelikan Brilliant Black, Aurora Black, and Waterman's Intense Black have not given me any trouble. I also haven't had trouble with any blues or greens that I've tried. Purple, brown, and red are the only colors that I actively avoid with these pens but some of that may be me just being overly cautious.

If you use supersaturated inks....it should be expected to stain.

Herbin, Aurora, MB, Pelikan are old non-supersaturated....out side the new MB permanent ones.

Pelikan 4001 inks must be safe or the company would not have made it.

BSB will give you a nice blue tortoise pen. :D Just don't know how bright a blue.

I have had my white tortoise M400 for a few years, maybe five years. I have used Noodler's eel black and Sequoia green in it and Sheaffer's blue black. Diamene black green will be next. I have had no staining that didn't wash right off. The pen has been inked for months, and I picked it up and it wrote right away after 3? months idle. You can't beat it. Fine nib, that's an older monotone 14K one.

I have a M400 and I've used a very wide variety of inks in it. No staining at all. I'd refrain from using the Baystate series of inks, but I can't think of any other fountain pen inks I'd worry about.

I too have a Tortoise M400 and I'd echo what others have said. Use the blacks and blues manufactured by Pelikan, Parker, Waterman and Aurora and you'll be fine.

I have an M400 and have used Noodler's #41 Brown (bulletproof), Private Reserve Chocolat, Skrip Red and Pelikan Blue and Brown. None of these have stained. The only cleaning hassle are the threads on the body of the pen as the ink shows more readily given the white background. The ink comes off but I've had to use a brush to get in the grooves.

Like others I've used most of the blues, blacks mentioned above without stain. I've also use Waterman's Havana - just because I like it so much and it seems to match the pen - also without staining. I also concur with the observation that keeping the threads clean is a chore, but I like the pen so much I'm happy to spend the time occasionally cleaning the threads.

I'm getting married in a few months, and I'd like to use my Pelikan M600 White Tortoise as our pen to sign our marriage certificate.

I'm thinking of loading it with either Noodler's X-Feather or Noodler's Bulletproof black.

Anyone got any experience with this?

I have filled my M600 white tortoise with WM Blue Black. What I always do with all of my pens after refill is to wipe the section with the water soaked tissue paper. This cleans up the ink stains right after the refill.

I don't use permanent or semi permanent inks with the pens I care about.

I used Noodler's Bulletproof Black in my M400 White Tortoise without any problems.
