Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black is one of the best blacks I have, I use montblanc black, pelikan 4001 brilliant black, aurora black.

its a tossup between all 3. for price I go to pelikan, for DEEP black, aurora. MB black? WHY NOT. ( *edit* I referred to the ratio of price and mL capacity )

although I am at the place where one wonders older ink formula are better than new ones. but that's other thing.

From my experience, the "Brilliant" in this ink's name refers to the fact that with a vintage flex nib, an aura of silvery black sheen comes dancing out of the pen, when using the right paper. Very cool looking!

Breathe. Take one step at a time. Don't sweat the small stuff. You're not getting older, you are only moving through time. Be calm and positive.

Pelikan 4001 Black is a staple for me. It's the only black ink I use in my M215 and my Phileas because their nibs are so wet.

I love the smell of fountain pen ink in the morning.

As has been said many times, all inks are not created equal. Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Black is an excellent, well behaved and water resistant ink. It excels in wet writers such as Pelikans and others.

The problem arises when someone pretends to use a dry ink with a dry writer. The result is usually poor flow and a lighter grayish color. The answer is not to fiddle around with the nibs but to use a wetter ink such as Aurora.

i agree, with a dry writer its kinda hard for the ink to flow

Currently Brilliant Black 4001 is my go-to black, and doing exams at the moment which require black ink, all my pens are loaded with it just in case I have to switch on the spot. This includes Pilot fine and Pelikan fine which are vastly different widths!

What's your experience like using this with the pilot fine? I've been debating getting this one, but with all the talk about it being dry I'm concerned that it might not fare well with very fine nibs.

Anyone else happily using this ink with Japanese fine nibs?

I've had no problems with it in a Sailor 1911. All my Pilots are cartridge / converters. I just use the Pilot cartridges. Their ink is very black and pretty water resistant. It does have a strong phenol smell, and can feather on cheap copy paper. Pelikan doesn't exhibit this, and I always have a Lamy 2000 filled with Pelikan Black.
