Waterman No. 20

Recommended Posts

Hi all - I've been MIA for a while but today saw a Waterman no. 20 in sterling basket weave overlay. The nib (no. 10) was broken - no tip - and I think there was a hairline crack on the edge of rubber inner cap (under the overlay). They wanted $900 for it but it was a bit rich for my pocket. I've never seen one of these and can't find any reference material on it...any ideas as to value? Thanks! Peter

A BHR one in good shape with a fine or medium nib runs $2000-2500.

Thanks Uncle Red. This one has a sterling overlay so I guess it's worth a little more. However, the nib is damaged - I imagine a replacement nib will be hard to find. Maybe Brad Torelli can fix this one - he's a wizard.

Nib is no big deal to replace or fix. Cap crack is a bigger issue

I'm interested in the pen if you are selling

I really would like the factory made version of the Waterman No. 20 that was made into a flask during Prohibition.

Well, I went back to the sale and the pen was still there - so I broke down and bought it. Also picked up a gorgeous Yard O-Led Imperial Dragon FP in sterling with a broad nib - really writes nicely. The Waterman nib is a basket case so if anyone has a spare No. 10 nib, please contact me. Thanks! Peter

PS - I can't seem to attach more than one image. How does one attach multiple images to posts please? The size isn't an issue, the images are around 200KB each.

Thanks!

Nice. Looks like the clip is missing the ball. Where is the crack you mentioned?

Put the photos in your gallery.

Beyond tipping what is wrong with the nib?

That poor Nib! What did someone do? Get yourself to a pen show or check the high end dealers for a new one.

The YOL looks great.

That looks like the last two cursive italic nibs I ground. What seems to be the problem?

Nibs were considered replaceable, but you should find someone to stabilize the crack. That Y-O-L is a thing of beauty. I bet the 20 ends up at least that nice.

Paul, there's about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch missing from the nib.

yes, unfortunately even Brad Torelli seems to think it's a goner but maybe there's someone who can fix it. I have no idea how they did this to that nib - looks like maybe someone jabbed it hard into a desk (ouch!) in a fit of anger or something.

Maybe someone got over enthusiastic with demonstrating flex...

I think someone sprung it severely, then snapped it off trying to fix it with pliers. I imagine it had a crease and the "repair-goon" didn't understand fatigue.

I wasn't serious about it looking like my nib work. Sadly I seem to only be hilarious to me, but in my head I'm a laugh a minute!

Ha, Paul - I can relate. In my own mind, I'm hilarious too. Now, if only the rest of the world could see how funny I am, Bill Cosby, Jay Leno, or Jimmy Fallon would have nothing on me :D

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
