The Preppy Case Problem

ChemicalFencer

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'm relatively new to the whole FP addiction. I have loved FPs for a very long time, used them in school, then stopped using them in school.

I remember telling an old GF of mine I had always wanted a nice, expensive FP. She was so fantastic that she went out and bought me (years later this is) a silver Graf von Faber-Castell. Still have it, but now in storage :(

Anyhow, back to my dilema.

I review and edit a lot of documents, and I prefer to do it by hand, and as such I use different colour pens (or should that be inks?). Blue, red, black, and green. I opted for Preppys, which I have converted to eye droppers. They work very well for what I do in the office or out on site. I have other pens (couple of Noodler's, Lamy Safari, 2 Picasso's I picked up in China, a TWSBI, and a Platinum Cool).

My problem comes when looking for a cheap, but solid(ish) case. I have taken to holstering them in a uni-ball case, but I'm looking for something else, but about the same size so they fit snugly into my bag. A photo should be attached of them in the Uni-ball case.

I have looked in several places but nothing seems to fit my (perhaps) finikity tastes.

Any advice would be very welcome.

CF

There are several cheap leather pen cases available on eBay that people liked ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/Fountain-Pen-Roller-Pen-Brown-Coffee-Color-Leather-Case-for-12-Pens-R16-/180985209404?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a238f223c is one I remember), the reason that many leather cases are so expensive is that leather needs to be tanned and dyed a certain way or there is a small risk of tarnishing some metal bits (a small risk, from what I know), so obviously people don't want to put their Montblancs in cases of regularly tanned leather, but for Preppies it should be no problem, you can take advantage of that and get a nice leather case for much cheaper than other people.

I'm going to buy one of these soon. It's sheep leather and comes in four colors. It's Clairefontaine so you know that at the very least it is what they say it is. I haven't decided whether I'm going to get the oval or square, and there's a trapezoid shape too. Not bulky at all and should last much longer and look better longer than cloth or plastic pen pouches. Here is a review on it.

Thanks for all the replies.

I had seen most of those before, was really looking for a hard plastic case. Muji had a hard plastic case but it was a little small. I'll probably go for the cheap leather case and add a mech pencil and possibly a brush pen to use as a highlighter. My office set will be complete.

Thanks again all.

ChemicalFencer, why not try and build one from Kydex? I haven't tried thermoplastics myself, but I think there are plenty of tutorials out there that make it seem doable ...

Or you could search Etsy for pen cases: https://www.etsy.com/search?q=pen%20case&ship_to=ZZ. Handmade and more "indie" than ebay ones.

Edited to add: you may also want to check out www.pencils.jp. Nice range of pen cases there with a good range of prices, and shipping charges are very reasonable too. I got this from them recently: http://www.pencils.jp/product/506.

Just recalled that I have the Muji large pen case featured here: http://www.muji.eu/pages/online.asp?Sec=15&Sub=66&PID=1021. I've stuffed it with 2 Preppies, 2 Sailor Manhattener's, a Kokuyo Une Onde Coloree, and a Kuretake waterbrush, and yeap, the case can close. Umm...Pardon the plastic cuff which I put on the right to keep the case open.

Kydex is definitely an option it is very strong and quite cheap you might need something to form it around.

I would be happy to help you if you need it.

Thanks again for the recommendations,

I have the smaller of the muji cases, it is more what I'm looking for; however,it's too small for my needs. I have now looked through pencils.jp and like some of what they have and like some of them too.

Also looking at etsy.com I've seen exactly what I'd like, but not going to fork out $625 for 4 preppys.

For the Kydex option, I'm not looking down that route yet either, but love the suggestion and the offer of help.

Thanks again all for the help, I feel a little spoiled for choice.

  • 3 months later...

Its been 5 months sine I started looking for a nice pen case, I have found it. It was on Etsy afterall from WunderLeather. He has some nice stuff, and I was ok with the price.

I had some cracking issues with my preppy lids, so I upgraded to Plaisirs - got a good deal in China with converters. The case had to fit them, and a pencil.

Very happy with it . . . .

An image is attached.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
