Fixing A Child's Handwriting; Program Recommendations?

I hope in time to be able to have that type of skill in my forarm and wrist. even just using my fingers i lack the fine motor skill to be able to write in a small space as it is i personally and having issues with 1x copies.

Forget about fine muscle control.* It's letting go of control that will get you there. Embed the stroke knowledge in the muscles, then get out of the way. That's writing. Ornamental Penmanship is another animal entirely.

* For example, the release window for a 90 mph fastball, such that it stays in the strike zone, is on the order of 1/10,000 of a second. No one can consciously slice time that thin. Skill needs to be embedded in the muscles and the method.

The liberty of the press is indeed essential to the nature of a free state; but this consists in laying no previous restraints upon publications, and not in freedom from censure for criminal matter when published. Every freeman has an undoubted right to lay what sentiments he pleases before the public; to forbid this, is to destroy the freedom of the press; but if he publishes what is improper, mischievous or illegal, he must take the consequence of his own temerity. Thanks everyone, again. :)

Muscle memory is a huge part of why we've failed so far… He has major difficulties with motor planning, has no tolerance for frustration, and very little motivators. This creates a huge catch-22; All aspects of writing frustrates him so he loses what little motivation he has and needs to work twice as hard to develop automaticity in anything, therefore he doesn't work enough to develop the muscle memory/automaticity and it's always a struggle. (<--- this all made sense in my head. Not sure it came out as well.)

I like the older programs because of the simple drills. With a new program and cool new pen, I hope to motivate him through the frustration. I'll be working right along with him.

I am reading this thread with great interest. Child saw it up on the computer and was interested - was I making fun? No, I told him I was hoping to find some fun way for child to learn how to write. Printing has not been particularly successful...

I thank everyone who has posted, especially from personal experience!

I used to use those grips when I was younger!

I think his grip is okay. It is with a pencil, but not ballpoint pen. I'll see how he does with the fountain pens. It should give him some more feedback from the paper, if he "listens" for it.

Scrivelry- If the child is developing "typically," you should be able to use most any program as long as he/she puts in some effort.

If you go to the IAMPETH website and look in the "rare books" section, there are numerous lesson books available in PDF format that detail body and hand position, grip and offer a multitude of basic movement exercises along with the usual stuff.

A couple are the Palmer Method (1935) and the Mills Modern Business Penmanship(1903)

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
