I buy ink for the ink; if it comes in a lovely bottle then that is a bonus.

As a slight deviation from thread topic, these inks are lovely not just for their bottles, which are very nice too, but for their packaging.

(Sailor for Bung Box: Sapphire Blue, Piano Mahogany(Mocha) and 4B Blue-Black)

Akkerman brown, in first place, but I also got two Lamy inks because the shape of the bottle appealed to me. The ink really is only so-so for me.

But now that I think about it, I may unbox my Montblanc bottles... Those I buy for the ink, but the bottles are beautiful too. The thing is that they are very well protected in the box, and you can easily fill a pen with the ink sitting in the box, so no risk of spilling ink anywhere... and those five boxes sit up above my desk in a neat row. And, I will confess, my dip bottle (to get pens started if they balk, and to rinse off excess ink, etc) was also bought because of its shape. It came with a scented oil which took forever to dissipate... Here is a picture.

Which ink is this? Or is it the oil?

I purchased this ink for the gorgeous bottle then fell in love with the ink as well!

I purchased it from here:

Ditto. I enjoyed the purple, which turns green when in use, but hated the red.

I've even bought inks to round out my collection.

But...I'm still looking for a Rubinato color.

This is, in fact, the inky water that serves to start my balky pens. Any pen that is dried out a little gets dipped. Evaporation contributes to the concentration of color slowly increasing. When it becomes really dark I sometimes fill a pen that sat a little too long, so it has a residue of dried ink in the converter or barrel or reservoir, and I fill up with the inky water and use it as ink. The color is totally random, although it tends to reflect my current color preferences. At the moment, dark purple seems the main tint. It makes for interesting colors, the main drawback being that every fill is unique. And sometimes I get really nice colors! There is some risk there of course. I use a number of different inks, among which Noodlers, Quink (by Parker), Diamine, and Private Reserve. They may all be mixed in there to some extent, although the main component is water.

Ah, I totally understand. I did the same with the Red Nostalgic Impressions bottle.

Oh and I dumped the Blue Myostosis (or however it is spelled) from this pretty heart shaped bottle into a bottle that a fountain pen could actually fit in!

I don't usually buy a full bottle of ink just for the bottle because the inks with the pretties bottles are usually the most expensive and I don't really care for those inks anyway. I do have a bottle of Iroshizuku that I received as a gift and the bottle is nice, but not nice enough that I would have bought it for myself.

However, both my manfriend and I have bought empty bottles from Goulet and then filled them with our own favorite ink mixes:

I really enjoy that they sell those empty bottles because it makes a pretty mundane ink feel way more fancy. :-)

PS - my manfriend just said that he would have bought an entire bottle of ink just for the bottle, if he had to...

Question!

Do you guys and gals keep your bottles on display like in amberleadavis' picture? I would like to keep a few out but I always hear to keep them out of light, but don't know why that is. It's a pity to keep them in the dark.

I really appreciate the look of my Iroshizuku ink bottles. I actually ordered an empty bottle from the Goulets a while ago just to have a more attractive container for my Chesterfield Smoked Topaz ink.

I also really like the old Diamine ink bottles with the emerald caps. They aren't unique looking, but they're designed with a very convenient wide base that insures a safe and spill-free ink filling session.

The prettiest are out on the desk where I can see them. Except for the Montblanc bottles, those are on a shelf over the desk in their boxes, where they are padded with foam; this is the way they are sold and I like the protection and orderly line of ink bottles up there. Most of the other bottles are in drawers where I can get them quickly but out of the way when not directly in use. From where I sit I see my Akkerman bottle, and my inky water bottle.

I think the main reason why we are advised to keep ink bottles out of direct sunlight is for the influence of ultraviolet light on the ink; the dyes may degrade under its influence. But I think this is probably not necessary, since glass prevents much of the UV from entering your workspace anyway, and then there is the glass that the ink itself is in. However I have not strenuously tested this hypothesis... some may still get through of course, and affect the ink, if you wait long enough.

I did a summer long experiment of putting bottles of ink the window. None of them faded in the bottle. Which is not to say that those same inks didn't fade once on paper because they did. Even still, display your inks!

I keep my bottles on display always, but they are a good 15 feet from any windows and thus I figure their UV exposure is pretty small...

BTW, it's even worse than I showed you.

Absolutely - I even designed and made a special shelf for my inks and samples! My studio does not have windows and the door is only open when I am in it (protection from the real danger in my house - the cat!).Even with the door open it is at the back of my north facing condo so too much light is definitely not my problem. Now, managing to keep a plant alive is another story all together.

Nope, no ink problem here I see ;)

Glad to hear that I can keep them out worry free. There's not a ton of sunlight in my room where I keep them anyway, so thankfully it sounds like i won't be a problem.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
