Hello From Belfast

Recommended Posts

Hello all, my name is Jacob, 19 from Belfast, Northern Ireland.

I have a lot of fountain pens, but I'm not a collector, they're just better than ballpoints is all.

I've been using fountain pens since I was little, but I never really learned proper handwriting, but it's usually okay I think.

So here I am, I thought I'd come and share my enjoyment of the finer writing tools with you guys :)
I'll post an ink review from today's shopping after this in the relevant place.

Ta,

Jacob

Welcome, Jacob !

I like your attitude. Fountain pens are made to be used. Otherwise, an album of photographs

would suffice.

Soooo, whatcha got ?

I have:
Lamy Safaris: Yellow, Neon Yellow, Black and Blue and my new AL-Star in Blue-Green, a white Platignum Vibe (I don't really like it much..), so many Parkers, including I.M., Frontier, Vectors, all the cheap ones really - and a few vintage ones found in boxes in the crawl space.

Also vintage Sheaffers, Watermans and unbranded ones, most of which are ceased up due to being abandoned uncleaned. I'm not sure of the models of these.

I've got a bag of literally hundreds of Italian-made super cheap plastic multi-coloured FP's, which write quite nicely considering.

There's a Cross ATX lying around somewhere, and also a Rotring Skynn, which was a gift and I did not enjoy its sticky grippy fatness.

I have pots of lots of cheapo, off-brand FPs, but I think I've covered the important ones here.
My everyday pen is the Neon Safari, but my brand-new-today AL-Star is intended to replace that.

And Sasha, I liked your metaphor, I'm a photography geek! I don't collect cameras either... *guilty face*

Welcome!

For someone who is not a collector, you've 'collected' a nice set of different brands.

And there are a few photographers lurking here on the FPN too (not sure about bakers..).Maybe post a few photos of your more favourite FPs ? or that bag of Italian ones !

Happy fountain penning.

thanks & best wishes, Captain Nib

Here's a pic of everything I could find in and around my desk, no effort exerted:

Includes 2 Safaris, AL-Star, Parkers and a handful of the cheapo Italians - seriously there's loads of these.

You do have a mixed bunch there. Are you sure you're not the sole Irish buyer / distributor for those cheapo Italian FP's ??? :P

thanks & best wishes, Captain Nib

Are those "cheapo Italians" fountainpens? If I would see them in a shop I would say they are fineliners (what Parker now calls the 5th)

They're definitely fountain pens:

Just noticed that the nibs are all marked 'WILSON SUPER SMOOTH'. Maybe I should start distributing them around Ireland! Haha :P

Knew it, you're going to flood the market with those cheapo Italian FP's....to fund your move into real Italian FP's !! Ahhh, D.ick might not like being proved wrong there...send him one to prove they exist. In fact, send me one too (or a baker's dozen :P ).

thanks & best wishes, Captain Nib

Cheap Italians are still real Italians!

That said, anyone could write Italy on the bottom of a pen... and Wilson doesn't sound terribly Italian.

Also, thanks to all for the welcomes :)

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
