Japanese Hand Made Fountain Pens

Recommended Posts

Good afternoon dear All,

Since not so long I'm looking into hand made Japanese fountain pens.

I already have Pilot/Namiki, Platinum and Sailor. So, I'm not looking for these.

I'm especially looking for high quality hand-made fountain pens from small companies with highly skilled people. Price is not really an issue.

I can not find anything on the internet, besides some in Japanese language, which I can not read.

I know Nakaya (just ordered a NeoStandard Shubo last month) and Hakase (about to order a fountain pen this month).

I have heard from Ohashi-Do but I can not find any site of this pen maker. I'd love to see some of their work.

According to me, there must be more of these kind of producers. Can anybody help me out with small high quality hand-made fountain pen manufacturers in Japan ?

If there are other non-Japanese high quality hand-made manufacturers of fountain pens, I'd love to hear about them.

Thanks for all the help.

Bram

VirtuThe3rd might be the right one to ask. He has placed a lot of lovely videos on the FPN of Japanes pen making. He really does a lot to export Japanese culture to us guys; and even I have started dreaming about hand-made Japanese pens...

If you are that enthused about these Japanese pens, it might be a good idea to learn some Japanese. You will learn more about the culture and read their web sites.

Hi Pajaro,

Thanks for the reply. Chinese I know a bit. Japanese is completely different.

Now into Arabic. Will take me a couple of more months to get it done. Maybe after that.

Hi Bram

As Ursus said, VirtuThe3rd (member here who has a nice YouTube channel may know more.

I remember a video some months back of a Japanese gentleman turning out unique hand made pens. He worked on a lathe but totally on sight. What we would call in Dutch: op het timmermans oog. (on the carpenters eye) Very impressive. But AFAIK he had a long waiting list...

So have a look at that YouTube channel. You'll learn a lot about Japanese pen culture.

Hi Bram,

I too am a lover of Japanese pens. In my opinion, Hakase is the top of the line, and their customer relations are second to none. Place your order...you will not be sorry.

I understand that Ohasido does not deal with overseas orders: you have to order the pen and take delivery of it in Japan.

Stylo Art is a very interesting option; look them up and have a look at their offerings. They are beautiful pens and not as expensive as some of the others (even though price is not important, it's always nice to know that you're not overpaying for something ;) ).

أتمنى لكلك التوفيق في دراسة اللغة العربية

PS: If you will be finished with learning Arabic in a few months, you are a better man than I am: I have studied and used the language for nearly 20 years and I still am amazed by how little I know.

Hi Daoud62,

Thanks for the support. My Arabic study takes place it in Amsterdam, as you write. It's a challenge and I'll be glad to know the basics in order to read a news paper properly.

Ohashi-Do: I know they do not ship overseas but I'm looking for a way to get around that problem.

Stylo Art: already contacted them and waiting for their reply.

As I will be in NYC 2nd week of March, are there any penshops that sell (pre-owned) Japanese fountain pens or any penshops at all that I need to visit ?

Thanks a lot for your input. Really appreciate it !

Others have posted that Ohadhido do not sell except face to face, and that certainly seems to be true. I have never seen them carried by any pen store. I only see them sold at events where the Ohashido people are in attendance . The exceptions are Kingdom Note, Eurobox and possibly Pen Cluster, which sell used pens. They may or may not have any available when you visit.

Do you have any definite plans for coming to Japan? If so. Knowing the dates I May be able to find out if Ohashido will be attending any craftsmen shows at department stores during your visit.

You may want to take a look at Tenso, a forwarding agent that helps overseas buyers ship their goods out of Japan.
