Help With New Staedtler 925 25 Mechanical Pencil

HI!

I've just bought a brand new staedtler 925 25 2mm mechical pencil for concept sketching.

However, the first things I notice while messing around with it are these:

1- I dont know how the correct way to replace the 2mm lead. If I feed it through the back, it won't fit the tube and a couple millimeters are visible outside.

2- Since the back cap is not a sharper unlike other 2mm mechanical pencils, how do I sharpen the 2mm lead?

I don't currently have one of these, but if you can't put the lead through the bottom properly, it has to go through the top.

As for sharpening, there are plenty of 2 mm lead pointers/sharpeners available; or you could buy another lead holder that has a pointer/sharpener under the cap.

Faber Castell make pointers and also one of the the KUM long point pencil sharpener models has built in 2mm and 3.2mm lead pointers.

Thanks guys, Ill get a new pointer then!

However, I still find it pretty weird having to feed the lead through the front tip. Im so used to doing it through the back that I wonder if Im not doing something wrong here haha.

Hi,

I normally feed it through the tip, but now I've checked and it can be done from the cap end too without problem.
I'm thinking about a lead pointer. I have the Staedtler 502 Lead Pointer Tub, but its more for narrower clutch pencils...

Hi!

I use these for artwork. The pointers from Cultpens are very good.

They're more commonly known as clutch pencils, or lead holders, and you feed the lead in either by pressing down the button and pushing in through the tip, or by pulling out the button and pushing the leads in that way. The sharpener button is useless (IMO) and the coloured ones that come with packs of lead are supposed to replace them so you can tell what lead's in what holder.

They're great pencils, I wouldn't bother with a desk pointer though. The cheap little ones from Cultpens are great!

Cheers,

Joe

Oh, yeah! the KUM pointers are excellent. Used to use some very expensive pencil sharpeners and pointers -- completely replaced with 2 KUM long point pencil sharpeners. (Essential items always require a spare.)

To sharpen it you need a special sharpener, a photo which I will try to post here

It usually costs a lot more than the pencil you bought, so don't be shocked in buying it new. Mine cost me about $30 in 1987

Use a penknife.

You can make the point as long or short as you want and it need not be round if you wish otherwise.

Just be careful not to try to shave metal off the clutch mechanism with the blade: such contact tends to mess with the blade and its sharpness.

I just priced this exact item at Amazon for $6.99, so it's very affordable. In fact I'll be getting one soon, I've been using a tiny Staedler pointer that came with my 980. I have used the built in pointer too, but it's a pain and you have to empty it by banging it lightly on a hard surface, I put a small bit of paper down to minimize the mess.

A lot cheaper than what I paid. Brilliant.
