What Is A Good Pelikan Pen ?

I bought the m200 with a m nib. I do regret that a bit. I will buy an m600 with a f nib for my next FP.

Careful! Pelikan gold nibs run large compared to Pelikan steel nibs. If you find the M200 medium nib too thick, when you buy an M600, go for an EF nib. And in fact, don't be awfully surprised if a gold EF ends up being very similar to a steel M. My gold M is thicker than my steel B...

My M400 (M) sometimes skips, but I still like it (some inks work better for it than others).

Have you tried other nib units in the pen? Is the skipping a function of the pen or the nib? If it is the nib, you can send it out for adjustment.

I haven't tried other nibs in that pen. It doesn't skip a huge amount, so I basically decided that I could live with it. It would be expensive to have it fixed.

I think Mike it work charges something like $35 for general nib adjustment (adjustment and service charge) plus shipping. I do not know if you are here in the states but if so, postage is usually quite reasonable. I have not used his services before but others have recommended him. I suspect his prices are in line with those of others. Of course only you can judge whether this is too expensive for you or not.

Hi Scribblesoften,

I'm in France, so shipping costs would likely be prohibitive. I've found that my M400 is rather ink-sensitive. It has something against Waterman inks (or maybe Waterman inks have something against my M400, but in any case, it's a very skippy combination). The pen works very well with Aurora Black, which I used in it for a while. It also works very well with a number of Diamine inks. I currently have it inked up with Diamine Rustic Brown, which isn't quite as well behaved in my M400 as some other Diamine inks (for instance, Sherwood Green), but I like the color so much that I'm willing to deal with a skip here and there (it's not nearly as bad as with Waterman). ;)

But thanks for the suggestion! :)

ETA: Granted, I have tried only two Waterman inks in it, namely Intense Black (the skipping drove me nuts), and Absolute (aka Havana) Brown (which was better than Intense Black, but still skippy). It's possible that Serenity (aka Florida) Blue would work better, but then, I generally dislike blue inks...

Lady P, TY for that advice I do not have a EF at all so I would have never considered this.

Do pay attention to her advice. My gold Pelikan F write wider than a steel M. Steel F/M and gold EF are good for me.

Just FYI: Fahrney's has had some substantial discounts on 800s (something like $350 or thereabouts, so a saving of about $300 off of full retail). They *may* not have the green striated barrels, but if you can live with all black, or the blue and black stripes (I have one blue Pelikan, and it is still a beautiful pen) this might be a good deal for you. I don't know if Fahrney's was selling limited stock or what, but you may be able to get a brand new 800 for about half price....
