Happy be here. New member. Big fan. Was sad when the site was down. Got hooked and bit by the fountain pen recently and have put together a decent collection over a few months by reading everything I can find--including on this forum--and watching YouTube. Shout out to Stephen Brown. Thanks for all who contribute; intend to be one of them now. Thanks to all. Great community forum. Take care.

What exactly got you hooked, and which FP did you first decide upon? Do you have a theme running on what you collect?

Good question Cap'n. My first pen was actually a brand new MB 149 to commemorate a big positive event in my life, something I could keep for years as a visual reminder of the event. Well, within a week I was hooked and every pen listed below, including today's purchase of the Xeno sea shell, took place within a 2 month time span. I am hitting the breaks a little now though because I am convicted that the price tag is too high to continue at this rate. Also, one needs a base to get started; after this I'm hoping--my base now in tact--that I will be able to make new acquisitions at a slower and more affordable pace.

I write a lot for my profession(s) and I have always had an eye for detail and a great appreciation for craftsmanship; fountain pens can display some of the finest trade skills still in existence today. So, I dove head first into every Stephen brown and Robert Goulet review video as well as hundreds of FPN threads. In just a few weeks, much because of the incredible support and community offerings of FPN, I have become a moderately informed collector, though I lack experience. I've also gotten close with Bryant from Pen Time and even Fountain Pen hospital as trusted vendors. And, I give nice pens away to clients as a "thank you" when they make a nice purchase from us. So Lord willing I'm here to stay. Thanks for your question. Everyone has their own unique start up story!

Cap'n: I missed you "theme" question. No diehard theme per say other than to begin collecting some flagship pens (1), some pens from each relevant/ major manufacturer (2), to collect pens from each major contributing country (3), and then to throw all hype aside and buy some cool oddball items (4)--like faber-castell Ondoro wood...super cool hexagon, real wood, not too expensive...and the Xeno sea shell which has not yet arrived. Those 4 things are my broad "theme." And I like em' smooth and wet writing..shout out to sailor. ;)

Thank u for your responses. You've already got a number of major names in FP's covered it seems. Not a bad way to start off with a MB. Some interesting themes, and all quite understandable.

 

I like FP's which may represent a vintage era, an important manufacturer, or indeed simply an instinctive reaction on seeing them. Or, if I just plain like writing with it.

 

Yes, slow down, enjoy the FP family...no doubt more family members to arrive.

Your MB 149 should be good for more than one lifetime. So, plan to bequeath it, or (better yet) take it with

you. We have some great FPN members on the other side.

 

The site going down is more than sad. It is downright expensive. I spent several hundred buck on pens.

My wife is very glad that the site is back.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
