Changing Lamy Nibs

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if it is possible to change the nib on a Lamy Studio or a Safari?

I ask because I was just at a pen store that sells Lamy and was told that I would have to have order the Studio with an Extra Fine nib instead of buying the Medium they had in stock and just having them order an Extra Fine nib to be placed on the pen later.

If it is possible to change the nibs yourself, what all is involved in the process?

Searching can be difficult. My searches, by default, always offer me in the last 30days ony. You should change this to a more appropriate figure if you want to search the whole archive.

This has been brought up quite a bit, I wonder if there is any benefit to having a pinned thread for the most common types of repairs.

We could have one for removing sections, resaccing pens, nib flushing, nib removal of various types of user serviceable pens etc etc.

What do you think??

A great idea.

I do know that right now I am having trouble finding something else: an idiot's guide (ie for me!) to correcting a simple tine misalignment. I have a gorgeous nib, but the tines are ever-so-slightly out, and I know this is something I should in theory be able to correct myself...

Check the pinned posts at the top of the Repair forum. biggrin.gif

I was being a little fascetious. dry.gif

There is some good information in there, old threads, links to repair persons sites etc.

What you are looking for is probably in there.

Changing the nib on a Safari,All-Star and Studio, is pretty easy and can be done with no problems. Some can be a little stuborn, but the nib slides off over the feed.

I know this sounds obvious, but I find that nib removal is easiest when the pen is wet - since the wetness helps to lubricate the "slide" process. Personally, I use a small sheet of rubber cut from an old bicycle inner tube to help grip the nib when removing it.

The writersbloc blog has a photo demonstration on how to do just that - it suggests putting a piece of tape on the old nib to make removal easier;

since my two year old just mauled my new Lamy, I will be following their advice shortly:

Thanks for the fantastic link. The solution provided on Writer's Bloc worked perfectly! This weekend I bought my first LAMY pens. I bought two in the Safari line. However, I wanted to interchange the two nibs to suit my preference with pen barrel colour. So, thanks again for the great link. I prefer this method to another one I "googled" as it ensured no damage could be done to the point of the nib.

P.S. I bought my new pens and a spiffy new journal at Phidon Pens LTD (you can google them). I cannot recommend this brand new (6 months) store enough. I have now shopped over the phone and had ink shipped to me in Windsor and shopped in person.

Wow, this was really easy! I have hesitated swapping some Lamy nibs for fear it was more involved.

This is just one more reason that Lamy is a great pen.

Thanks for the helpful link.
