How Much Does Your Fp Weigh?

Post your FP and it's weight. http://pics3.city-data.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif

I find the difference in FP weight fascinating. To date, not having been able to visit a FP store to test drive anything, or a FP show (which would be optimum!), I only have experience with two FPs; the Lamy Al-Star and 2000 Makrolon. I keep a FP text file with useful links to threads / posts and sites and started a short list of weights for comparison purposes.

30g 1.06oz VP
31g 1.09oz Lamy Studio
25g 0.90oz Lamy 2000
22g 0.78oz Al-Star
20g 0.70oz Decimo
17g 0.60oz Safari

They are from the Goulet Pen site from the full product specs tab. I don't know if these are with or without ink, with or without convertors (or cartriges), but they are a good starting point when shopping and researching and visualizing writing with a fp that you may purchase.

Some are lightweight, some are mid. The ones I use the most are 1 ounce plus. Especially if the balance is good,I like heavier pens.

Every now and again I've put the fountain pen I have with me at that moment on the scale at the local Post Office. So far all of my fountain pens have weighed in at about 0.4 oz.

All my pens weigh 28g or less. Any more and my hand gets tired from holding them. :) Interestingly enough, my heaviest and lightest pens are both Italians. The Visconti Rembrandt was a brick at 32g, so I sold it, but the Omas is like writing with a cloud. <3

Hi,

I write with everything unposted. I think my heaviest pen unposted is about 20-25 grams. Many of my pens are about 15 grams or under unposted-filled weight with converter.

My Franklin-Christoph Collegia is a bit heavy at 1.65 oz or 46.78 g. Took some time to get used to it and I do write with it unposted.

I've a wide range. Choice depends on the mood, but I only carry the lighter ones in a shirt pocket.

Anything beyond 30g is not an option for me, because I want to carry my pens in my shirt pocket. So the heaviest is the Pilot Vanishing point with 30.5g. The others are lighter, but I have never weighed them.

Michael

I reckon anything under 25g is good for all day writing.

Anything over 25g needs good ergonomic design to be good for all day writing.

I like my P61 c/c at 21g and P51 at 24g for these reasons.

The Duofold Centennial at 35g is OK due to good design. The identical shape Kaigelu 316 at 45g was not good, due to the high CG and weight. After replacing the brass barrel finial with an acrylic one, the weight dropped to 35g and the CG to lower than the Duofold. The pen is now slightly easier to use all day than the Centennial.

Regards,

Richard

Conway Stewart gives all the weights and measures for their full line of pens on their web site. I wish more pen companies did this. It makes online shopping much easier and less of a surprise. A few years back I wanted (and got) for Christmas a Stipula Model T and was quite surprised when I got it how large it was, and how little it weighed (having only seen it on line, never in a store).

Nibs.com has a great chart on all the pens they sell, including weight and section diameter, the two most important characteristics for me. Unfortunately, they don't cover any pens at the lower end of the price spectrum.

For the record, I prefer something around 20 - 25 grams in weight. Pilot Custom 742 and Sailor Pro Gear fall in this range, and are my most comfortable pens to use for extended writing sessions.

Okay, I see that almost everyone else is going all metric on me.

So using Google I've converted the above weight of the pens I usually carry in my pocket to about 11.3

grams.

Some years ago I bought one or two Chinese fountain pens that had broad nibs, actually broad nibs with tipping material and everything. I've never brought them to the Post Office, and so have never put them on a digital scale, but they were quite heavy, they were solid metal, and I really had a hard time writing with them. I frequently write at quite an angle, with a clip board balanced on my leg with my knees drawn up. So weight tells in pretty short order under those conditions.

I think those two Chinese fountain pens are the heaviest ones I own.

I love this thread, it caused me to immediately drop what I was doing, grab my scale, and break out all of my fountain pens... just give me a reason! The weights below include ink filled barrels. It came to this:

Kaweco sport: 1/2 oz. = 13 grams

Lamy Safari: 5/8 oz. = 19 grams

Inoxcrom Mini: 5/8 oz. = 20 grams

Parker 51: 5/8 oz. = 21 grams

I have to concede that the brand of scale and its level of accuracy i'm sure will cause the numbers a degree of variability. I noticed on another post that the Kaweco sport was listed as 19 grams. Same pen and very different than my 13 grams.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
