Sailor 1911 Profit Maki-E Owl

Recommended Posts

I purchased this lovely pen after working a rather large number of overtime hours at work one pay period. I'd been wanting to acquire it for a while, and I was not at all disappointed. I hand-wrote the review, below.
Here is the pen in the box. The flash obscured the owl a bit.

Here is a close-up of the owl (you can see the perfect little raden eyes):

And finally, a picture of my hand, so you can see why I think it's just a bit too short for me, unposted:

That definitely is one very pretty owl and some lovely writing as well! Thank you for sharing.

Thanks koofle! I admit I tend to get lost just looking at the pen and letting out my inner "squeee...pretty." :-)

The beautiful maki-e seems to me a bit of a double-edged sword. On one hand, you have a pen that is both tasteful yet excellently (dare I say confidently?) standout, yet on the other you have a pen that you cannot under any circumstances post. Being something of a chronic poster myself, it's with a heavy heart that I realize that should I ever come into the possession of a maki-e pen, it would undoubtedly serve as something of a display piece rather than an actual writing implement.

But that aside, this is an excellent and well-worded review! Also, you have quite the nice handwriting; it makes me want to polish mine a bit more, haha.

Cheers, and thanks for the review!

I actually do post it (this may be grounds for a public shaming, I realize). I just do so much more mindfully and carefully than I would with some of my other pens, so that it leaves no trace. :-)

Oh, wow. I'm also very careful when posting the cap on my non-maki-e 1911 Full-size, and yet I notice that doing so leaves very tiny microscratches on the barrel. Hope yours doesn't develop any of those!

Also, if you don't mind, would you be alright with posting a pic of the pen posted? I'm curious as to how much of the maki-e falls under the cap in doing so. Oh, and since I have no knowledge of this pen whatsoever, aside from what's in this review, is this model based off the 1911 Standard (1911M) or the Full-size (1911L)?

Cheers, and thanks!

I'm not an expert on Sailors by any means, but I believe the Profit is similar or equal in size to the 1911M. It is comparable in size to my Namiki Falcon, but the barrel of the Falcon is a little bit longer (judging by my extremely scientific means of guestimation here at work).

I took a couple of pictures. The first one is me holding the pen upside down, but you can see that the cap doesn't interfere with the owl or moon portion of the pen at all:

In this second picture, you can see that the cap only intersects the painted portion in two rather small places:

Also, wow my hands look big!

Hmm, so apart from the top of the maki-e design and the artist's signature (much lower on the barrel, as I recall?), none of the bits of the design are in danger of getting scraped off? Nice to know!

But yeah, I still don't think I'm getting a maki-e pen anytime soon. Urushi, definitely, but not maki-e :P

Thanks for the review and the extra pictures!

Is the whole barrel covered with urushi lacquer? Does it taper off gradually away from the artwork?

By the way, how is the pen holding up while being used daily?

A realy good looking pen.

I do not think the pen is too short, the problem is your hand is too large - lol

Thanks for the review

Yes, the whole barrel is covered in the laquer. The pen is holding up very well, Sailor sends a soft cloth with it, which I use regularly, and it resides in a pen wrap in my bag when not in use, so granted I am fairly careful with it! But it has no dings or scratches
