Hi everyone,

I'm a student who takes a lot of notes and hope to do so with my first fountain pen, Lamy Safari. I'm also buying a Pilot Metropolitan, both will use black ink. Is it better to get a FINE or MEDIUM nib for the Lamy Safari for everyday high volume writing (on plain school paper)? the line I want is somewhere between the fine and medium line that they offer, but I'm worried that the fine nib will be "scratchy" as some people have written in reviews. However, I'm also worried that the medium will be to thick. What has your experience with Lamy Safari been? Fine of medium? (I'm not considering EF of B)

Based on your criteria, get the fine nib.

I agree with the fine nib. Mine has a little feedback but I wouldn't call it scratchy. Perfect for notes. You can also buy another nib down the line relatively cheaply and swap out as desired.

PELIKAN - Too many birds in the flock to count. My pen chest has proven to be a most fertile breeding ground.

wow thanks for the feedback, it seems the fine nib safari is well received from everyone! I'm going to order the fine nib then.. just hope I can write fluently without having to think about any scratchiness or resistance during my studies :o

I would go with the Lamy XF.

I used a Parker F in college.

The Lamy F is like my Parker M, the Lamy XF is like a Parker F.

 

For the XF nib, what you NEED to do is get filler paper or notebook with a HARD SMOOTH finish. This will minimize the scratchiness you may feel. This is what I had to do when I went thru college. The generic filler paper acted like blotting paper, and wicked the ink out of the pen, making a wide messy ink line.

I use a Lamy Safari with F nib for just that purpose daily, and I never have complained about any scratchiness. It's smooth, with a nearly ideal amount of feedback.

I have a green Lamy Safari in fine, and it writes pretty thick for a "fine", so I'm glad I got F instead of M. I love it for note taking, doodling and just general writing. The nib is the smoothest of my fountain pens.

I use a Lamy Safari in a Fine nib daily for that purpose. I tried a Medium, but the lower quality paper I was taking notes on would spread the ink out and feather into a mess. The fine is nice and smooth and a good width in my opinion.

The inks aren't all the same, so it's not really a fair comparison, but it's enough to give you a rough idea of comparative line widths.

Lamy fine is almost medium. I'd suggest go with that.

Definately the Lamy fine. I have 4 Lamys and I would not call them scratchy either and would not take notes with anything larger than the Lamy fine if using the Lamy. You may find that you feel it more as a medium in your opinion! Now the Pilot fine will be more of an extra fine in Lamyville and the Pilot medium will be more of a fine in Lamyville

Thanks everyone for the feedback. It seems like the fine nib is the way to go. I've ordered today and am waiting for the shipment to come!

i often have the same questions as you as well. I have found owning a safari fine and med point...it really depends on the ink u are using. the med point really shows line movement and shading but the fine is slightly more scratchy. I use both for note taking and personally i have found the fine point much smoother. However both the fine and med nibs lays ink down quite well. I generally prefer wetter inks for Lamy pens than dryer inks.

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
