Looking For A Large Pen

novarider

Recommended Posts

I like large pens with decent amount of weight. My 2 favorite pens are Pilot Custom 823 with a B nib and a Pelikan M805 with a M nib that is on the broad side. I am looking for my next pen.

What would you suggest? I do not want a MB 149.

Hi,

I don't know if you're going to like the pen itself, but the TWSBI Micarta is about the exact same size.

M805 uncapped: 5 1/2 in

Micarta uncapped: 5 5/16 in

Both girths: about 1/2 in

The only problem I have with a custom pen would be what if I don't like it? If I buy a manufactured pen and I don't like it I can sell it and try something else. What would the resale be on a custom pen?

Which of these pens are modern? I should have put in the op that I am not really into vintage pens for daily use.

All except the Parker senior Duofold, Sheaffer Balance and Flat top I would call modern but I use even those as daily use pens.

You might also try the Yard-o-Led Grand Barleycorn or Grand Victorian.

Some Nakayas would fit the bill, size-wise, but they are going to be pretty light.

On the modern Onoto Magna, you can even specify that your pen be weightier. :)

Hope that helps!

Currently using:Too many pens inked to list, I must cut back! :) I can guarantee there are flighters, urushi, and/or Sheaffer Vac-fillers in the mix!!!

Try a Jinhao xx50. They have a good deal of weight. Most are fairly large pens with brass barrels. And cost a lot less than most fountain pens.

I have one or two Chinese-made heavy pens that function very well.

Enjoy,

Yours,
Randal

From a person's actions, we may infer attitudes, beliefs, --- and values. We do not know these characteristics outright. The human dichotomies of trust and distrust, honor and duplicity, love and hate --- all depend on internal states we cannot directly experience. Isn't this what adds zest to our life?

Visconti Opera Master Demo. I recently acquired one and it's a striking pen. Very long, lots of weight, power filler (vac), wonderful nib and looks sharp with the "squarred circle" motif. Should fit your "ask" well.

I just purchased a YOL Grand Barleycorn and am currently waiting for it in the mail. Based on your requirements, I would suggest looking into it to see if it fits the bill. It's heavy, solid nib reviews, and silver! ;)

Pilot 845 in Ebonite with Urushi.

Pretty much any Ebonite Dani Trio is going to be bigger than your two current favorite pens.

Others worth looking at might be the Bexley 58 (large, relatively lightweight) and the Ranga #3 (I bought mine from Peyton Street Pens). These are not expensive, unless you opt for the 14K nib in the Bexley.

I have two of each of these. Great big daily users if I don't want to take the M1000 or the MB 149 out that day. My Ranga #3's are ebonite, with JoWo steel nibs. I don't know if all the vendors carrying the Ranga #3 install German nibs, but I feel that these are superior to the Wality Indian nibs sometimes seen in Ranga pens.

If you are more into acrylics, look at the Laban Mento. Almost all of these are acrylic, although they did make a couple of colors in ebonite a couple of years ago.

If you don't mind buying used, look for the modern Conklin Duragraph of a few years ago. These are great big flat-top's that come with either the Conklin gold nibs (IIRC, 14K) or steel. I have 3 of these and use them a lot. Some of the Conklins may need work on their nibs and/or feeds to become consistent writers, but once sorted out they are also very good. I happen to think that if you don't mind a cartridge/converter pen, the modern Conklin pens get a bad reputation because of all the feed problems. If you are prepared to deal with that, they are really quite good for their prices.

The Sailor King of Pen? You can even have a choice of 'speciality' nibs if you wish.

Take a look at the Pilot Justus 95, a really big pen and a great writer!

If you like the size of the Pelikan 800 you may like the Montegrappa Espressione.

It's a very similar size but well built and quite weighty. Also not too expensive. A lightly used one went on ebay yesterday for £67

This cracks me up. If you were to purchase a custom pen, how could you not like it? You would have control over the size, color, texture, filling system, nib, ... you'd be able to incorporate into the pen all the design elements you like in your two big pens, and to eliminate all the things you don't like.

What if it's to heavy or to light or the balance is off? What if The nib is to large or to small? What if what I THINK I would like I actually don't like etc...

I have bought dozens of very expensive pens that I thought I would like but I didn't.
