Akkerman #8 Diep-Duinwaterblauw

My first ink review is done! Sorry, but my scanner is not hooked up, so the photo is taken with my iPhone 4S with default settings and not so good lighting indoors at my home. If any of you über-reviewers out there with the right equipment (like maybe Sandy1 or Amberleedavis) want, I can send you a vial for another review.

Anyway, I like this ink because it flows well and has worked right away in all my pens. I like the color because it's blue/black/teal-ish. And, the bottle is wicked cool!

PS - Even though I used flex nibs, this is my work copier paper and just can't handle all the ink from a flexed nib.

PPS - Tried to get a better photo, but this is the best I get.

Thanks for the review - hopefully the first of many. This is an interesting ink, a colour I haven't been able to find elsewhere. It's the most troublesome of the Akkerman inks I've tried but also the one I'm certainly going to keep.

Thank you for reviewing a great ink. Pendleton Brown brought this ink to the DC Pen Show a few years ago and I instantly fell in love. I believe that this is actually rebottled Diamine Twilight, so I'd love to see a comparison between the two.

I think there's more green in Diep-duinwaterblauw than in the lighter Twilight. It doesn't directly match a Diamine ink like others.

I agree with the green tone. I believe the name translates to deep dirty water blue. For sure there would be some algae growing in that kind of water!

I just tried a sample of this ink and I'm really impressed. Great flow, some shading and a great overall color. If it wasn't so hard to get, I'd buy a bottle right away. As it is, I'll have to plot & plan to get a few of the cool Akkerman bottles sent over to reduce shipping costs per bottle.

'Diep Duinwaterblauw' translates in: 'Deep/profound Dunewater blue'.

To understand the meaning of this, one should know that The Hague (or Den Haag) is a city placed just behind, and in some parts on top of, the dunes which actually form the coastline.

Drinking water is pumped out of these sand dunes. It's the water that gives the ink its name.

This has become the goto professional use ink for my eccentric pen buddy, to whom I donated my bottle, when I decided that blue/black reminded me of the bruises I got from being beaten by teachers, for my poor handwriting. It is almost the same colour as the ink in the little well set into my school desk.

LOL. But no, our memories are what make us. I was forcibly converted to right handedness and the only ink we had in the 1950s was blue/black. I have tried hard to like it.

I was going to ask if you were or are a lefty, like me. I attended public school in the 1960s, and am so strongly left handed, not to mention strong willed and German-Irish-Norwegian, so any teacher who might have tried to make me switch didn't have a chance at succeeding! My only memory of pens or ink during school was the one time in 5th grade when I took the end off a Bic pen and sucked on it to see if the ink would come out. I ended up with a mouthful of very thick and nasty tasting goo and had to mime needing to use the restroom so I could get rid of it! I also tried to use a Shaeffer cartridge fountain pen in class, but the teacher made me take it home and use only ballpoints. The price we pay for artistic expression!

I had no chance. They had a technique. One teacher started by handing me a pencil and if I reached with my left hand I was struck on it with a cane by another. They also tied my left hand to my belt and called me abusive names. They told me I was the "devil's child" and that left handedness was "unnatural". Being strong willed and resisting resulted in caning across the backside. My younger brother who started school in 1960 was allowed to remain left handed. My daughter is left handed and has no problems with fountain pens. I have two left handed nieces who were allowed to remain left handed. I am still determined to learn to write nicely before I pass on.
