Brahmam Pens, India

Very less is known about the history of Brahmam pens of Andhra Pradesh, India. Below is the little information i could gather from discussion with Mr. Ramanamurthy of Ratnamson pens and some info from Deccan stores.

Brahmam pens was started by Mr. Brahmam, the nephew of Mr. K.V Ratnam of the famous Ratnamson pens. The pen manufacturing was initially started in Rajahmundry and then moved to Bhimavaram near Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh.

 

Few years into pen manufacturing, Mr. Brahmam passed away and the pen production continued under his son-in-law. About 6 years ago, he too passed away resulting in the shut down of the company.

 

The Brahmam pens are now very rare. Now and then few are seen in stores. Deccan pen stores have a few of them but they can be purchased only with a gold nib.

 

Some of the Brahmam pens i managed to purchase at reasonable prices. The green pens are purchased from Meenakshi stores in Bangalore and the burgundy ripple pen from Mr. Kandan of Ranga pen company.

Sad to see the passing of another boutique maker, and I have to say they look stunning, especially the burgundy ripple.

 

The clips are of course Parker-inspired, I wonder if they are signed between the fletchings.

I heard that at the height of their popularity, they were always eager to try new models. Deccan pen stores used to stock them.

 

The burgundy ripple has a special place in my collection.

Yes they are eyedroppers. The burgundy ripple pen holds 2.8ml of ink. Lasts entire week for me

Thank you for you interesting post. It is a shame they are no longer made as they look very nice. I have recently added some Indian pens from Ranga and Guider to my mostly vintage collection and like them very much, I have the Guider as my work pen today filled with Diamine Quartz Black.

Do you know if Mr Kandan still has any Brahmams left? I would like to add one to my collection.

You can contact Mr. Kandan: mpkandan@yahoo.co.in. He is also a member of FPN: mpkandan.

When i talked to him regarding Brahmam pens, he had a pre-owned one left which he sent me. You can notice the wear on the clip.

 

Deccan pen stores also have few of them but only with gold nibs. I can enquire for you if you are interested.

Yes, I am totally agree with you that very few people are known about the history of Brahmam pens. I think, these pens are available in selected stores. I am really impressed by your little information about Brahmam pen features.
