Is This Pen A Prototype?

Drawframe

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I have a small collection of thirteen fountain pens which I use on a daily basis to take notes and write letters to relatives. I constructed a couple of wooden stands to hold all the pens vertically and needed to acquire a couple of slim pens to fill the vacant spaces in the stands. I recently obtained a strange pen which combines a fountain pen with a ballpoint.

Is there anyone able to identify the pen from the photo's below or has anyone seen this type of thing before?

It seems to be a combination of a fountain pen and a ballpoint. It weighs 20 grams and it 132 mm long. It looks and feels quality, but it didn't come with a filling system though I think a small standard cartridge will fit. I cannot trace the logo on the top of the barrel or the "JRID" on the nib. I was advised to post it here.

Any ideas?

Hi,

It may be one of those odd pens from Asia. How big is the cartridge connector? Is it bigger than the connector on a Parker or international cartridges? It may take Platinum cartridges.

Hi Dillon

I doubt if a connector would work on this pen as the feed tube protrudes a long way out of the section and would obstruct the piston before it reached its full travel. I've tried small international cartridges, the feed tube is too wide; also too wide for Sheaffer cartridges. I'm inclined to agree this pen is oriental and perhaps made up from parts, the logo on the cap seems to be incised rather than stamped. The pen though it fits together very well and the "combination" idea is well executed. I'll keep it around and see if I can find a cartridge that fits. Thanks for your suggestions.

Hi

Have you tried a parker cartridge, they have a wider neck than the international types, and they can be had in both London and short versions.

Hi,

I suspect it can take a Platinum converter or cartridge since Platinum pens tend to use very long connectors. How long is it?

Hi Dillon

The feed on this is 7mm long. Using a 3mm drill bit I have bored out a small international sized cartridge which fits snugly onto the ink feed tube. I have filled the cartridge using a syringe with normal Parker Quink Blue ink

and lo and behold the pen writes well in both fountain pen and ballpoint pen modes. It has a fine line without any skipping though the ballpoint mode is a darker shade. Maybe the ballpoint has retained some of the previous ink whereas I gave the fountain pen section a good soaking.

I doubt if I will use this on a regular basis as although it posts in both modes this produces a long 160mm pen which is a bit top heavy.

Hi,

3 mm in diameter and 7 mm long is about the right length connector for a Platinum cartridge or converter. (yes, it's quite long and thick) If you want, you can try to get a Platinum cartridge from Cultpens and see if it works in the pen. If that works, they also have Platinum converters.

For some reason it reminds me an old Pelikan... I do not remember the name right now. Is this knock of or something?

Hi,

Many people may be wondering why I mention Platinum. The reason for this is that in Taiwan at a certain point in time, Platinum pens were very popular. There are even some odd non-Platinum pens that took Platinum cartridges. Here is a Minka from that era that takes Platinum cartridges.

Take a look at the really long, thick connector:

Here is the whole pen

It says that it is made in Germany, but it's really made in Taiwan. It's possible that the pen you have came from the same region and time period.

Thanks - I'll get a Platinum cartridge and give it a try. My present setup working fine with the re-bored small cartridge, but best to see if Platinum will provide a ready available refill supply.

This is a sample of how it performs in both modes:

Received platinum cartridge from Cult Pens this morning, but although ink feed tube fits into the cartridge OK the body of the cartridge itself is too wide and hits up against the section before its able to sit up against the base of the feed tube. Very good service from Cult Pens by the way, that was a quick order/delivery.

Thanks for all the help, I'll just let it stand alongside my other pens for now.

Hi,

Do you have pictures? Not all Platinum pens or pens that take the cartridges have the arrangement where the cartridge reaches the bottom of the feed tube. An example of this is Nakaya. The cartridges butt up against a metal ring on the section before they reach the bottom. Can the barrel screw on with the cartridge in place?

Hi

Here's a pic of the Platinum cartridge near the pen's section. The ink feed tube was quite a loose fit but as the cartridge body was too wide to fit into the pen section body there was just no support.

Here's the adapted small international cartridge in place.

It took a bit of force to press the feed tube into the Platinum cartridge to break the seal, I got quite a few splashes - New Rule: always have plenty of kitchen roll nearby. I hope using these photo links in the post is acceptable.

Yeah, it's a bit too small. I wonder what cartridges it was made to use in the first place. Have you looked at Parker cartridges? It's still a bit of a long shot I feel.

Morning

I have tried Parker, Waterman and Cross cartridges. The small international cartridge (drilled out to <3mm) are the best solution to date - needs filling with a syringe though. I'll leave it as is now and over time will try anything that looks suitable. Thanks for the help.,

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
