This was an impulsive purchase on ebay, I put in an idle bid and to my shock, won. Consider this review as an extension of my review of the Izumo #28 Akatame.

 

The Platinum Izumo is offered in three broad types today. Ebonite with Makie on it, Ebonite with Urushi coating in three colors: Red, Green, Black and finally in Iron wood (Tagayasan) with a Urethane coating (NOT Urushi), here again two finishes are offered, Glossy and Matte. The pen under review is the glossy finish one. Model No: PIZ-50000T #21 in F point.

 

The Izumo is sold gift wrapped in a special brown wrapping paper, and this is how I received the pen. The converter is not included with the pen so it was placed externally.

Some background about the materials: The wood is from the Dalbergia latifolia tree, a native of India thus special to me. It is also known as Indian Rosewood or Malabar Rosewood or Bombay Blackwood. (Bombay happens to be my city, I am curious how this wood got the Bombay name :) )

The pen is very dark, looked nearly black at first glance. But the grain pattern is there and is very nice.

I then took out my Akatame Izumo to compare. The wooden pen is substantially larger then the Ebonite Izumo, as you can see from the following pics. I also found some interesting engineering differences in construction which I will attempt to show:

The section thread insert is different on the Tagayasan. It has a no threads zone right at top so that the possibility of cross threading is minimised, impressive. :)

Also the section on the Tagayasan is plain resin, unlike the Urushi coated section on the Akatame.

The Tagayasan has a metallic insert inside to support the section threads. On the other hand, the Akatame has threads directly cut on the cap's Ebonite. Let me show you:

The pen was delivered to me a few months back. But only yesterday I decided to ink it. :)

 

First fill was with Platinum Blue-Black ink in converter. A writing sample:

You can see how thinner it is as compared to the Platinum C nib. :)

 

A comparison with the Pilot Silvern F nib:

I measured the line widths, verticals are 0.3mm and horizontals are 0.2mm

 

Superb nib and writer. The balance is very good, as good as my Akatame.

 

In conclusion, I feel the Izumo is one of the more underrated pens out there and holds its own very well in the face of the plain versions of the Urushi Nakayas.

Yeah, isn't it. I really must take some sunlight pics of the pen to show off the amazing grain and the F nib is simply superb DPD. :)

Great review! Is the section similar in width to other Platinum pens (like a 3776), or is it thicker like those on the Nakayas tend to be?

Awesome Hari. This is a beautiful pen. Great job of documenting the differences. I love my Izumo and this is another one that I would love to get into my grubby hands.

Fantastic review, as always! It's a beautiful pen. I am constantly tempted by the Izumo...maybe your review will push me over the edge :)

Currently using:Too many pens inked to list, I must cut back! :) I can guarantee there are flighters, urushi, and/or Sheaffer Vac-fillers in the mix!!!

      Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

      It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

      Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

      @asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
