Cane Fields Paper - Any Thoughts?

Hi all,

Have any of you tried Cane Fields paper? After the tragic demise of Staple's 'Eco' bagasse paper (at least in the UK), it seems to be one of the only affordable Bagasse stocks available over here. Well, 80% sugar cane waste anyway.

Manufacturer link here (no affiliation)

It's available in the UK at Rymans for around £3 a ream, which seems pretty decent if it behaves well. Even if it's only 80gsm...which is also the weight of Sainsbury's extra-cheap (and IMO really wonderfully behaved) Bamboo paper. (Still no affiliation, and so on.)

Anyway, if anyone tries a sample I would be very keen to hear your opinion. If not, I'll try and snarf a ream next time I am in Bath or another city with a Rymans.

Thanks!

David

It's a decent, to say the least, paper. If the paper sold in the UK is the same as the one in the US, then it's definitely worth a try.

It's a bit off-white, I cannot put my finger on the tone but if you place it against a true white paper, you'll see it. It's smooth with a tiny bit of texture. Not the smoothest one among copy papers but in the smoother part of the spectrum. It takes the ink well: no spreading/feathering, the echo is there but again the paper is among very good ones.

The paper is somewhat dry, however. It doesn't suck the ink from the nib. It's not like the paper is coated (while, of course, it might be, I have no idea) and, therefore, the ink doesn't want to form a line. Nothing drastic but the paper has this distinctive feature. In general I avoid writing on it with dry fine pens. But with my usual pens I have no reservations about the paper at all.

The description above is accurate.

I recommend you try a ream since its so affordable.

I too was pleasantly surprised at its performance with ink.

I have sold Some of my journals with this paper.

They are good enough to be worthy of being bound into my journals :-)

I can't remember if I had done a review of this paper :-(

Anyway, it's decent paper .

I like it! I have a few reams. I do like the 22lb more than the 20lb -the latter is just decent. don't know why I can't seem to find the 22lb anymore...

the 20lb wont make your ink feather, but it will show thru -might even let some bleed thru.

edited: you know, if you can get Caliber paper -sold in the US at CVS- buy that one; it's quite good!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Quick update. I ordered a couple of reams and, after a little courier-related fun, they finally arrived. Every bit as good as you guys had suggested. And given the price it might well be worth binding some to make a few small notebooks.

Oh to have that translucent pink Prera! @migo984 has the Oeste series named after birds. There is a pink one, so I’m assuming Este is the same pen as Oeste.    Excellent haul. I have some Uniball One P pens. Do you like to use them? I like them enough, but don’t use them too much yet.    Do you or your wife use Travelers Notebooks? Seeing you were at Kyoto, I thought of them as there is a store there.

It's not nearly so thick that I feel it comprises my fine-grained control, the way I feel about the Cross Peerless 125 or some of the high-end TACCIA Urushi pens with cigar-shaped bodies and 18K gold nibs. Why would you expect me or anyone else to make explicit mention of it, if it isn't a travesty or such a disappointment that an owner of the pen would want to bring it to the attention of his/her peers so that they could “learn from his/her mistake” without paying the price?

Why nobody says that the section of Tuzu besides triangular shape is quite thick. Honestly it’s the thickest one among my many pens, other thick I own is Noodler’s Ahab. Because of that fat section I feel more control and my handwriting has improved. I can’t say it’s comfortable or uncomfortable, but needs a moment to accommodate. It’s funny because my school years are long over. Besides this pen had horrible F nib. Tines were perfectly aligned but it was so scratchy on left stroke that collecte

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth
