Bulletproof Black Ink Other Than Noodler?

Schoenberg

Recommended Posts

I am really happy with Noodler's standard bulletproof black except that it is too wet and thick.

I want a truly bulletproof/water-resistant black ink.

I see a complete list here:

https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/index.php/topic/14905-complete-list-of-waterproof-inks/

but I cannot trust this thread because it includes lamy blue-black which is not water-resistant according to my experience....

Hello Schoenberg,

The only ones I can add to the list you have there are Private Reserve's Invincible Black and Invincible Aqua. I haven't used either one yet, but being PR ink, I would assume they will be a wet ink and on the more viscous side. I am sure others more "in the know" with these new fangled BP inks will chime in with their experiences.

All the best,

Sean :)

I haven't had any experience on blacks (I like my colors ;) ) other than the Sailor Kiwa-guro mentioned in the thread.

It really is waterproof and dries pretty fast, but a bit on the pricier side of things.

Platinum make a carbon nano-pigment ink that's similar to Sailor's Kiwa Guro. Both require diligent pen flushing - if these inks dry out in a pen they'll thoroughly clog it.

De Atramentis make a blue ink with cellulose reactive dye.

Then there are a few inks with high Iron Gall content, for example: Diamine Registrar's Ink, Ecclesiastical Stationary Supplies Registrar's Ink, and P.W. Akkerman #10.

that list is 7 years old. Lamy Blue-black bottled was highly water resistant at that time. Now it's the same formula as the cartridge, non-water-resistant.

I'm a little surprised that Heart of Darkness isn't on the list. But HoD could have been introduced after the list was made... HoD is more penetrating than regular Black. Not as thick. But could also be wetter since it has less surface tension. (I don't have Black so I can't directly compare)

My husband is currently using De Atramentis Document ink in Black. This is marketed as waterproof (our experience suggests so), but it is fairly wet - again in our experience, certainly much more so that ESSRI.

Although not a black user, I was pleasantly surprised just how water-resistant Pelikan 4001 Brilliant-Black and Sheaffer Skrip Black are. Based on the fact that Pilot Blue and Blue-Black are pretty water-resistant as well, I' would guess that their black would be as well. Check the reviews.

I'd say give J. Herbin Perle Noire or Pilot Bottled Black a try. If you're willing to go blue-black, give Rohrer and Klingner Salix or Diamine Registrar's inks a try. They are Iron Gall inks and won't go anywhere once on the page. The downside is that they also won't go anywhere if you let them try in your pen, so have to make sure you use the pen regularly or clean it out if you aren't. The other bonus of those inks is that they work very well on poor quality paper as well, and the Rohrer and Klingner ink is fairly inexpensive.
