Greetings All FPN

Would you take a Fountain Pen to work if working in a freezer?

I work in a cold storage warehouse where the Temp is -10* and -20*

in the Ice cream freezer. I rotate pens weekly what I take to work.

I take no less than 3 Jotter pens and 2 mech pencils. [ P51 repeaters

are my 1st choice.

Here is next week go to work pens.

Ken

From a chemistry point of view most fp inks are water based with dissolved pigment molecules in it. When the temperature of a liquid decreases so does it's ability to act as solvent decreases. So this basically means as well the risk of the ink freezing and damaging the you have problem the pen is more likely to clog even at temperatures above 0 degrees C as less pigment will be dissolved.

I wouldn't risk it either use biro or pencil.

I have no first-hand experience, but I guess you could try Noodler's Polar inks. I would experiment with a pen that is cheap and easy to clean...

If it is in your hand or in your shirt pocket your body heat should keep it above freezing, unless your a reptile. I have spent hours outside in 0 degree temps taking notes and though I froze, the ink in my pen never did.

Why don't use a ballpoint pen with Fisher space refill or Schmidt P950 G2 Megaline Pressurised Refill, both can act very well in extreme temperature, both looking like standard parker refill. From this 2 producers there is short refill (D1 standard) pressurized and you can use in multipens as well.

Another advantage is writing upside down.

If you wanted to try, the only inks I would think would work are the Noodler's Polar inks.

On the other hand, there's more questions than the ink. Writing with an FP is trickier than writing with an pencil or ballpoint, if you're in a freezer all day do the ergonomics work?

YMMV. I'm not working in a freezer so I really can't say if I would take one or not.

I afraid my answer would be no. No extreme temps for my FPs or inks if I can help it!

When I think of settings for the use of luxury writing instruments, an industrial freezer is very far down on the list. I think the job has to dictate the instrument. When I worked at the hospital I had to use a ballpoint because I was constantly filling out carbon forms (in triplicate, no less). I could have forced a stiff-nibbed FP to do the same job, but I had other things vying for my time and a ballpoint was better suited to the task (gasp!) so ballpoint it was. My FPs were always waiting for me when I got home to write the rent checks and enter notes in my journal.

Greetings Ken, et al,

Sanford used to make the "No-Blot" ink pencil - which was PERFECT for these types of applications. Unfortunately, they are no longer made, but check out e-bay- sometimes they come up.

All the best,

Sean :)
