Lamy Safari - Does The Cap Actually Unscrew?

I just bought a Lamy Safari, and I notice that the top of the cap is a Phillips head screw! Does this serve a purpose, and actually unscrew, or is it merely decorative?

Decorative it is used to determine weather it is a roller ball or fp as the roller ball version has a flat head screw like top. It makes it easier to determine which type of pen it is when it is in a pen pot.

All of my Safaris (which are all fountain pens) have cross tops, but my pink Safari (older edition), also a fountain pen, has the circle with dot in the centre top. The newer version of the pink Safari has the cross-top. Any idea why the older pink version has the dot top? Thanks! :)

The pink Safari with the dot top was a 2011 special edition, while the one with the black cross top is a 2013 re-issue.

Each limited Edition has something perhaps beyond the color which distinguishes it. They reissued the pink edition for instance. If not for the top, how we know what edition? Sometimes it is the clip, like the blue one I have has a red clip, different versions, denoted by the color, the clip, the dot versus the cross, etc.

It does unscrew, but I don't know if it has a purpose other than decorative.
