Tips For Leather Pen Case?

I am considering making a leather 3 or 4 pen case in the style of the Piquadro 3 pen adjustable case. Does anyone have suggestions for the leather type I should use? The guys at the leather shop suggested a "vegitan" leather or even a chrome tan leather (with a cloth liner)as safe for pens as long as they do not contain carbon steel. I seem to remember a discussion here on safe leather types but I have not been able to find the discussion again. Suggestions welcomed.

I have a couple of Aston cases that I'm very happy with, one a 3-pen case the other a larger 10-pen case. Both are very well-made and do a great job of protecting my pens. They also make 4-pen models.

I have some scraps of veg-tanned leather. How big a piece is needed to made a pen case?
