Review - 1948 Parker 51 Vacumatic

Recommended Posts

This is my first review ever, and I have a 51 Vac as my muse!

I did my best to abide by the rules and guidelines of this forum, but if I have strayed in any way, feel free to give me a good admonishing! :)

Also, I do apologize for my lackluster handwriting - one of the reasons I got into fountain pens in the first place is because I very much want to improve it.

Pleasantly ensconced with another great pen:

Nice review  However the 51 is not a pen for me because it is too thin and it has a too stiff nib

Pens are like watches , once you start a collection, you can hardly go back. And pens like all fine luxury items do improve with time

Thanks! To me the 51 is just right - as a matter of fact, it is the thickest pen I own (aside from a Jiinhao I purchased for the "lol" factor). Sadly, I have never had the opportunity to indulge much in flex nibs, but perhaps it is because the pens I started on are stiff-nibbed and I know no other way :D.

euuuh it's nice but if you know that you have a bad handwriting(and i don't blame you for that mine is worse) why do you do a hand review??you should type your review and make just a shot with a writing sample to see how the pen write and it will be a lot easyer to read the review

A people can be great withouth a great pen but a people who love great pens is surely a great people too...

Pens owned actually: MB 146 EF;Pelikan M200 SE Clear Demonstrator 2012 B;Parker 17 EF;Parker 51 EF;Waterman Expert II M,Waterman Hemisphere M;Waterman Carene F and Stub;Pilot Justus 95 F.

Nearly owned: MB 149 B(Circa 2002);Conway Stewart Belliver LE bracket Brown IB.

For some perverse reason, public scrutiny tends to motivate me to improve, especially where my handwriting is concerned. Call me something of a penmanship masochist.

images are WAY too big. can you resize? make them say, 1000 pixels wide, reupload and I'll fix the post so it has the smaller images instead of these giants. :)

a few tips that might also be helpful- use a darker ink. With the style of your handwriting the lighter blue makes it very difficult to read. Also- lined paper might help because you have a tendency to vary the heights of your words which when coupled with the light ink makes it very difficult to read.

Thanks for the review. The Parker 51 is not my favorite pen because it is thin, ie, its diameter is too small for me. I suffered a series of strokes about a year back, and I tend to favor pens that a lot bigger.

Having said that, I own 3 Parker 51s, which I use for when I just need to jot down short notes.

It is an iconic pen, and I hope to be able to use mine soonas soon as I recover from the aftereffects of my stroke.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.

Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
