Herbin 1670 Blue Ocean

It would have been so awesome if they could have made a way for it to have a silver or even a gold sheen. I agree, that's what is missing given the expectations based on the first 1670 ink. Maybe they'll find a way to do something cool with the next in the series (if there is one).

It's not that it's a bad ink, but I've been using a lot of delicious Sailor blues lately, and this just can't hold up against them.

It's chalky and ashy in the light areas, but even in the darker areas the colour isn't very saturated.

It behaves acceptably, but I really feel that it lacks any kind of personality, which is important to me in an ink.

I do know one or two people who enjoy washed out blues, and in that case, this ink is for you, because it is the nicest washed out blue I've ever seen. It's just not for me.

This is my day to day business ink and though pretty enough (more saturated than the samples here, but I tend to run my pens quite wet), it is definitely overpriced and there are cheaper alternatives from the likes of Diamine which get me more excited.

 

... But the bottle is a nice ornament if you're into that kind of thing!

Hi, Georges. I did a swab comparison last year, and I happened to include MB Royal Blue. YMMV, though, since you can see from my writing on this page (all the small writing in is J. Herbin 1670 Bleu Ocean) that it is more saturated here than either Sandy's or Saskia's reviews. My original sample and first bottle were the same. I'm actually dreading a little bit the possibility that one of my other two unopened bottles of Bleu Ocean will be more like what I see in reviews, though maybe the difference is more about how I like my pens set up. Anyway, disclaimers aside, my impression from writing rather a lot with both inks is that there are similarities, but the differences are that Herbin Bleu Ocean is darker and more saturated than Montblanc Bleu Royale.

My Bleu Ocean also seems more saturated. Less dusky. It seems like a really saturated mid blue. It doesn't seem to show up as saturated in scans though.

I already have Noodler's Blue (for pop) and Waterman Blue (for control and cheap ease), so I don't feel a need for anything like this in the basic royal blue category. A couple other blues tempt me occasionally, but not this one.

Nobody needs this ink, especially for the price, but I'll say this, it writes like it deserves a high price, IMHO. It is lubricious and pretty much perfectly tuned for good flow and optimal saturation. Setting aside color, I'd easily place it above Noodler's Blue, Waterman Blue, and Montblanc Royal Blue on performance. That's in my pens from my bottle, of course. YMMV.
