THE LAS VEGAS PEN POSSE

Invites you and your ink to compete in our 2013 Fade Olympics.

Prior events have been widely attended by FPNers globally.

The 2012 Summer Fade Tests had over 800 samples. We tested ball point pens, roller balls and fountain pen inks. We experimented with different papers. We even compared how some the inks withstood the sun after being exposed to water.

Smaller tryouts - Including the Four Months in an Attorney's Window and How Long Does Toner Last? have been critically acclaimed.

If you would like to submit your samples, please PM amberleadavis for mailing information.

We look forward to a sunny new feature!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Amber :

Absolutely lovely ! I'll try and pull a couple of examples together, and post them out in the next week or so to you. I'll drop you a PM on this with some ideas.

As I recall, the use of the Noodler's Coral Sea Blue led to an Australian excursion to get more of the ink. I'll see if I have an ink or two around that might offer similar excitement for this year's competition. Maybe we can see a lot of submissions with the incredible Dutch inks that were the subject of mass purchases through the LVPP ?

And, let me add, before any of us forget, thanks for all of your incredible hard work in placing specimens in your caboose (no, for the casual reader, that's not some code for anything, this lady has exactly such a fine edifice/transportation item), and even more, thanks so much for all of the efforts on the before and after scans and FPN posts that make the tests so valuable !

A new set of ink tests for 2013, hurrah !

THANK YOU!!!

I'm thinking we will post them from September-December. We can have fourth quarter results. :)

Yes, the results from the last experiment changed my inky buying habits (and purchases from Australia).

Please have your samples mailed to us in Las Vegas by August 15, 2013. The samples will be up for the last quarter of the year and results will be posted next year.

So, in the interest of getting things started, I'm going to post a few helpful hints, a flow chart and some samples. Larger image is here.

On each sheet - if possible - please include the following information:

FPN User Name:

Paper: Brand and Name

Pen Used:

Ink Brand Name:

Ink Name:

Color of Ink: ***

Choices:

  • BLACK (not on the color wheel)

BROWN (not on the color wheel)

  • Red

  • Red-Violet
  • Violet
  • Blue-Violet
  • Blue
  • Blue-Green
  • Green
  • Yellow-Green
  • Yellow
  • Yellow-Orange
  • Orange
  • Orange Red

*** We did not have users list the general color before, but when we created the spreadsheet we discovered that it would have been very helpful. The ink will (probably) not be EXACTLY one of these fourteen colors, but try to choose one of the 14 colors color that best represents the ink. Larger color wheel can be found here.

http://sheismylawyer.com/INK/attachments/color_wheel.jpg

So, let's take an easy ink - BSB. You would include the information:

Manufacturer: Noodler's

Ink Name: Baystate Blue

Color of Ink: Blue

How about a harder to define ink - Dragon's Napalm.

Manufacturer: Noodler's

Ink Name: Dragon's Napalm

Color of Ink: Orange

*Now, if you put a different color - say "Red Orange" or "Brown" - that's still okay. You just tell us how the ink looks to you once YOU put it on the paper.

Sailor did great doodles which allowed us to see how swabs held up as compared to lines from a pen.

Be sure to put your name on the paper so that I can be sure to give you credit. This sample is one of my favorites.

Your samples do not have to be limited to fountain pens (or even pens) and scientists of all ages are encouraged to participate.

During the experiment, we may even have some inks that don't fade at all.

And some that fade instantly.

I'm in for sure!

Choosing which to send may be a bit problematic...I will try to include some less common inks.

Awesome! I'm in the process of preparing my bag for our pen meet this weekend and I literally have none of the items you mention!! I'll see if I can find one or two!

@asota -- Yeah, I think I have a few rolls in my fridge that are probably 20-30 years old at this point (don't remember now if they are B&W or color film) and don't even really know where to get the film processed, once the drive through kiosks went away....  I just did a quick Google search and (in theory) there was a place the next town over from me -- but got a 404 error message when I tried to click on the link....  Ruth Morrisson aka inkstainedruth

There is still chemistry for processing regular chrome (positive) films like Kodak Ektachrome and Fuji Velvia, but Kodachrome was a completely different and multistep beast.
    • Ceilidh
Ah, but how to get it processed - that is the question. I believe that the last machine able to run K-14 (Kodachrome processing) ceased to operate some 15 or so years ago. Perhaps the film will be worth something as a curiosity in my estate sale when I die. 😺

Take a lot of photos!   If the film has deteriorated or 'gone off' in any way, you can use that as a 'feature' to take 'arty' pictures - whether of landmarks, or people, or whatever.
